Thoughts on NFC East Teams Draft - Trying to be fair
Dallas Cowboys
1/11 Demarcus Ware (Sr), OLB, Troy, 6-4 251
1/20 Marcus Spears (Sr), DE/DT, LSU, 6-4 307
2/42 Kevin Burnett (Sr), OLB, Tennessee, 6-3 239
The word for the day is versatility. The other word for the day is bigmuthas. Coach Parcells definitely does like to have his options. The three draftees collectively allow us to show virtually any defensive front we want. Should be very confusing for opponents. We have 5 picks on Sunday.
Ware concerns me, but I'll trust in Bill. Hearing Jerry speak of Ware getting only 20-25 plays per game is kind of dissappointing for the 11th pick. Maybe he's just saying that for early in the season. My hope is Parcells knows exactly what he has and what to do with him. Imagine he has a lot to learn, but he has the things you can't teach. Sounds like he has the right work ethic and attitude. Definitely has the athleticism. Simeon Rice with a team-first attitude would be awesome.
Spears is the perfect guy for what we're trying to do. I don't get the concerns about his effort. He had 120 tackles and 9 sacks in the SEC from LDE. What the heck was he supposed to do? His reported negatives sound a lot like the reports on Richard Seymour, Marcus Stroud, Kevin Williams, and John Henderson. I see a guy whose game translates extremely well to the NFL anywhere on the DL, not to mention a guy who will come in on goal line sets on offense at TE and FB. Great leader and top football smarts.
Burnett has all the athletic ability and yet wasn't much rushing the QB or in coverage. Due to scheme or talent? I think he's a guy who will be a ton better than he was in college and he was pretty damn good in college. Can step in a play strongside OLB in a 4-3 or inside in a 3-4. Nice size and can probably grow into a 245/250 lb guy with his frame. Smart and hard worker.
New York Giants
2/43 Corey Webster (Sr), CB, LSU, 6-1 199
3/74 Justin Tuck (Sr), DE, Notre Dame, 6-5 268
Both picks represent good value for where they were picking. They each underachieved though, and they're kind of soft in my opinion. Don't think they improve the Giants much. They only have two more picks on Sunday.
Wanted Webster for Dallas - convert him to a FS. I don't feel he'll translate well at CB. Not quick in the feet or hips. Plays best when he can make the play in front of him, which is why I thought he could make the transition to FS. Thought they had really good CBs already in Peterson and Allen. Maybe they're playing him a FS.
Tuck - probably the best value among the NFC East teams. More of a RDE, and they seem to have found a good one Umenyiora, also from Troy coincidentally. Tuck's not a power end that's going to replace Strahan in a few years.
Philadelphia Eagles
1/31 Mike Patterson (Sr), DT, Southern Cal, 5-11.5 292
2/35 Reggie Brown (Sr), WR, Georgia, 6-1.5 196
2/63 Matthew McCoy (Jr), OLB, San Diego St., 6-0/230
3/77 Ryan Moats (Jr), HB, La. Tech, 5-8.5 210
Some interesting role players, and they have 10 MORE FRICKIN PICKS on Sunday (ugh)! They should be very deep this year.
Patterson is a nice rotational guy at the very least, and maybe he defies his size limitations and becomes more. Sounds like a high-character, maximum effort guy and a very safe pick at the end of round 1. Philly was already very deep at DT so I don't really fear him. Probably frees them up to trade Simon for a day 1 pick next year unfortunately.
Reggie Brown - really high on him. Physical, maximum effort guy. Tough intermediate catches and will block downfield. Will at least give them something serviceable across from T.O.
OLBers are fairly bland in their scheme. McCoy can fit, but I thought he was a reach. Moats, eh. Wasn't a fan. Nice balance and a good all around back. Maybe they're preparing for Westbrook's departure next year. Fills the same role.
Washington Redskins
1/9 Carlos Rogers (Sr), CB, Auburn, 6-0.5 196
1/25 Jason Campbell (Sr), QB, Auburn, 6-4.5 230
Pretty sad (not really ). They only have 3 more picks on Sunday.
Rogers - very good total corner, and might develop into the best corner in this draft. Mostly just replaces Smoot and doesn't especially improve the Skins the next couple of years. He's just filling a hole (capably, most likely) left by Smoot.
Campbell has some nice tools, but I just see a player with a very long, slow release similar to Randall Cunningham or Aaron Brooks. I can't slam him as a prospect, but was he worth 3 picks, including a 1st in a very strong 2006 draft? Was Patrick Ramsey that bad? I have to say no on both accounts. He does not improve the team for at least 3 to 4 years, if at all. 2006 is going to fun watching Skins fans look longingly at a top 10 draft pick that should have been theirs.

I think when it's all said and done, all 3 teams will come out of this draft OK, except Washington is gonna be laughed at. Eli Mannin is going to be very good, and they sacrificed this draft for him..Eagles always find a way to get good players, and have depth. So far I'm lovin' what we did.
On Ware..you usually play what, 50-65 snaps on defense per game? So if he plays 25 that means he's playing about half, and in a defense that is going to change up it's scheme alot, along with having a deep rotation up front, Ellis, Fergi, Glover, Obogu, Ware, Coleman, and Spears, that's not that bad.

yep, Philthy's picks don't scare me at all, they should've moved up but I'm glad they didn't...them getting MW or BE would've been a nightmare
Still left to accomplish:
sign OT Winston or G Moore

Andy Reid and Philly understand how to play the draft...they got a DT who will be a starter in time and a quality rotation immediately...in college, Patterson was almost unblockable....at 5'11" and quick, OLs have a hard time getting under him, and he's almost as wide as he is tall...lol.
Moats is a guy many Dallas fans wanted...for a team that played in the SB and had very few weaknesses, Philly had an excellent first day, imo...they are not screwing up and setting themselves up for a fall in a few years...they are taking quality players that will help them stay on top of the East for a long time unless the rest of us hit on some superstars.

Agreed Wayno - I think Philly is putting together a solid future and what is probably a drive to a Superbowl, ultimately.
It's scary frankly - we obvioulsy have to go through Philly to get where we want to get and on one hand it just got easier, but on the other, it just got tougher.

I think Philly had a decent first day, but they may be reaching the point of diminishing returns. If anyone thinks 14 rookies are going to make their team, they are fooling themselves. They are drafting people who will be cut - practice squad at best. Philly should be trading some of these picks for choices next year.

honestly other than Moats, I thought their day was pretty lousy...Brown may end up being a good WR but I think Patterson will have trouble against NFL Ol's on a down to down basis, and was picked way too early...Matt McCoy was a 2nd day pick...they should have used some of the late pciks to "work" the draft as you say, but yesterday was not an exmaple of how to "work" the draft...if they use all those picks alot of them will be wasted

Ware is a pass rusher. His play is dictated by passing downs primarily and more importantly 3rd downs. I have no problem with estimating 20-25 plays if thats how the game dictates. Parcells and Jerry will play him 70 plays a game if the defense needs it. When you have the talent Dallas does now in the middle, they will be contantly moving from 3-4 to 4-3 and back again as well as rotating fresh guys every other down (like the '92 Boys). This is going to be fun to watch.

That's one way to look at it - the other way to look at it is, most Ware supporters compared him to Haley. Some even suggested he would be quicker and more explosive.
I don't recall Charles Haley playing part time.
Hopefully it will all work out though.

1/20 Marcus Spears (Sr), DE/DT, LSU, 6-4 307
2/42 Kevin Burnett (Sr), OLB, Tennessee, 6-3 239
B+.
Ware offers best pure pass rush ability but played small school ball and is not a polished player. Offers dimension team did not have. Will help immediately on 3rd downs.
Spears should be a day 1 starter as a DE. Can stop the run and will collapse the pocket. Strong, good leader, great overall size/athleticism.
Burnett is a big hitter who plays with emotion and heart. Big time tackler who sheds blocks as opposed to avoiding them. Can play ILB or OLB. Should be ST star as a rookie.
3 immediate impact guys but no offensive help yet.
New York Giants
2/43 Corey Webster (Sr), CB, LSU, 6-1 199
3/74 Justin Tuck (Sr), DE, Notre Dame, 6-5 268
B-.
Good selections where taken but light haul overall.
Webster struggled a great deal this year. His college coach didnt go get him which says a lot.
Tuck fell because he plays a little high and stiff for a LB. Not really great size for athleticism. Will need to use great technique.
Very possible that neither guy starts. They needed a few starters.
Philadelphia Eagles
1/31 Mike Patterson (Sr), DT, Southern Cal, 5-11.5 292
2/35 Reggie Brown (Sr), WR, Georgia, 6-1.5 196
2/63 Matthew McCoy (Jr), OLB, San Diego St., 6-0/230
3/77 Ryan Moats (Jr), HB, La. Tech, 5-8.5 210
A-.
Patterson is what Simon was supposed to be as a burst guy up the middle. Size could be a concern against tough NFCE running games. Should replace Simon.
Brown should be in mix as 2nd/3rd WR right away. Not special but steady and should get chances provided TO is around.
McCoy is a reahc pick and a small guy overall. He may be maxed out already. A bit of a reach pick based on need and they had too mnay picks to ever reach.
Moats is an excellent choice as the relief pitcher for Westbrook. He'll fill in nicely and contribute right away.
All 4 should play right away but McCoy may be a better special teamer this year than LB.
Washington Redskins
1/9 Carlos Rogers (Sr), CB, Auburn, 6-0.5 196
1/25 Jason Campbell (Sr), QB, Auburn, 6-4.5 230
F. Probably the worst draft so far.
The one thing you could not do was trade 1sts next year for picks this year. The draft was too weak for that.
Rogers is a very good player but 3rd CB and at 9 was taken too high. He won't replace Smoot this year.
Campbell is a good player but not a special one. Trading up for him was silly. He won't help for at least 2 years and by then the team should ahve folded for lack of competitiveness.
Long live Snyder!!!!
But I still don't know what any team saw Thursday night that would have made them comfortable with waiting a round or two for the offensive lineman they wanted. ---Todd McShay
We just converted half our LB to DL. We have a 30m starting DL, it better be pretty friggin good.

Haley was a part timer here.
We were ridiculously deep and he subbed out alot more than Glover or Ellis did last season.

With your assesment of every pick, I think you are giving the eagles too much credit.
