day one thoughts on us and others
1) we'll all be anxious to really see DeMarcus Ware do it on the field, but as I told Hos if Parcells isnt senile and Ware REALLY "reminds him" of LT, the guy was a great pick...we havent been able to corral QB's for years and this guy was the drafts most explosive edge rush guy
2) how lucky can one get part III...Jason Witten should have been our pick in rd 2 of 2003, he falls in our laps in the 3rd rd...we pass of Kevin Jones, Steven Jackson and Chris Perry in rd one last yr, try to trade up for KJ unsuccesfully and then have Denver nab Tatum Bell one pick before we land the best RB in last yrs draft (JuJo)...this yr we have Marcus Spears as a legit consideration at 11, try to trade up for him from 20 and then have him fall in our laps at 20
3) Kevin Burnett...people outside the SEC probably dont know much about him but this kid is a a really good football player
We have the ingredients now to be a very very good defensive team...if Mike Zimmer cant make this work he needs to be "Old Yeller-ed" ASAP
Still alot of good players there for day two...I am really hoping we land Sproles or Fason with our 1st pick, though I suspect both will be gone...pretty good OL selection still left as well...
Other thoughts:
1) Mike Shanahan is a terrible, terrible GM....that was just a horrendous draft yesterday in addition to all the poor free agent moves they made
2) The more I watched of Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers, the move convinced I was I was right...these guys both have bust written all over them
3) Jacksonville...Matt Jones....lol
4) Stupid trades of the day...New Orleans moving up 3 for Jamal Brown, Oakland moving up 3 and leap frogging two teams everyone knew were taking QB's to take a CB
Teams I thought did well (in no order)
us obviously...we got a little lucky with Spears at 20....
Arizona, Giants (for not having a 1st rd pick they landed two big school talents) Tampa, Bengals and Baltimore, if for no other reason in that you knew they were just begging to get Clayton and Miami
teams that just dont get it:
Denver is annually now one of the worst drafting teams, and yesterday was pathetic...Buffalo...Tom Donahoe is vastly overrated...Houston...Travis Johnson at 16? Morency? How many RB's do they need? Colts...Kevin Hayden in rd 2? The Kentucky kid in rd 3? Green Bay...just horrible IMO...The Rams...Seattle and Washington

This was a great draft for our front 7.
Ware will suprise, he is more than an edge rusher, he has freakish football strength and will bull rush Tackles. Imagine a 255 pound OLB that can take on Oline and run with TE'S and RB's.
Spears is Seymour to our 3-4 scheme. He knows more 3-4 playing for Saban than Zimmer. He will make everyone around him better. 305 pound DE...
Burnett will play at 240-245 with 4.55 speed and carries potential all pro grade talent to our LB mix

Morning Pops - you are correct. Wasn't there a thread by Nors that was something like "stop the Ware madness at 11" or something?
I didn't want Ware at 11 either, but we have him now so I'll embrace the pick and hope for the best.
..and good morning to u2 Winky.

I thought he was just an overrated "run plugger."

Great post, David.

completely agree, especially w/ #2 and 3 in ur 'other thoughts'. For the most part I really am impressed with the players Parcells has taken. But getting Witten in the 3rd, JJ in the 2nd and a 1st rounder to boot, and Spears at 20 is some serious value. Hope Parcells stays around for at least one more draft. Here's hoping we get some depth today and not just special teamers.

i also am very glad that we got spears. he was my pick of this draft for us. also the lb burnett hopefully becomes one the good lbs that can be a strong starter for us by his second year. now i wanted merriman because of his size. i worry about ware not really playing against top teams alot so i hope he can hold up throughout an entire season at his size. offensive lineman are alot tougher to get around in the nfl then some college lineman are.
today i want a good rb that can be a good backup for jones in case jones misses any games this year. we need a rb that we can have a behind him that can carry the load.

With the 1st pick Dallas got the exact guy they wanted, with all option aviable to them they choose Ware. 2nd pick of the 1st rd what a pleasent suprise to see Spears still on the board and Dallas did not have to move up to get him even though they were looking to do so. 2nd pick kind of a suprise getting Burnett but it is clear to see that Dallas is being extreamly defensive minded in this draft
