Default 3-4 vs 4-3 What I never got

If you looked around at the better 3-4 teams you saw really big NT and Really big ends. 3-4 teams were big on the line. Dallas never seemed to want to invest in the type of NT I felt they needed. For that reason if nothing else I'm excited by this move to the 4-3.

I also think the 4-3 will be good for the read option, I think it's less pressure on the 4-3 end and the OLB than it is on the 3-4 OLB. I believe it puts more speed on the field in space.

what I never got

What I got....a Used Carpet Salesman from up North that said Demarcus Ware would never be able to play DE in a 4/3.

You have to think back.

in 2003 and 04 we had a need for defensive lineman on the interior pretty bad. IN the offseason they made the decision to go to the 34 because parcells preferred it and convinced jerry paying and finding 34 olb was cheaper and easier than finding weakside pass rushing 43 ends.

in the offseason going into 05 we handled it perfectly, not sure why everyone forgets this.

We had jason ferguson a real true 34 two gap nt who was a run stuffing monster, then we had glover to rotate with him and play the nickel.

We drafted marcus spears and chris canty and had greg ellis and kenyon coleman rotating at end. Coleman was acquired from the raiders in 04.

so going into 05 bradie james was a better fit for the 34 and if they could get the lineman to make it work we were semi set at linebacker.

drafting spears, canty and ware made it a great fit.

our defensive line in 05 and 06 was excellent.
Spears, canty, ferguson, ellis, coleman, glover and jay ratliff. that is a tremendous group.

In 06 we lost glover to the rams but we added stephen bowen and jason hatcher.

there is a reason this team became a contender and got good. that defensive line was one of the main reasons.

in 06 we had spears, canty, coleman, ferguson, jay ratliff, jason hatcher.

ellis was stood up as an olb.

in 05 against arizona we lost jay ratliff for the season right when he was coming on, in 06 we lost greg ellis for the season at arizona right when romo had rejuvanated everything. those were big losses.

but when we switched it was all about the line and they put excellent players out there.

since then we have not put the resources there.
