Default The Right Direction?

I am confused by the monumental shift to our teams defense. I am reading everywhere that the focus on the draft in round one will be the defensive line. While I agree the D line needs help, if this offensive line doesn't get a major talent upgrade we will be right back here at square one next year with a new coach and no direction. My belief is that we should draft Oline in Rd 1 and 2 much like San Fran did when they selected Iupati and Davis in the first round a couple years back. I'd trade back to the early 20's and select Warmack or Cooper in rd 1 depending on who's available and then use the extra pick to move up and take Barrett Jones in rd 2. This gives us a core on the Oline to take into the next several years with Tyron! You can then either use what little money will be made available to resign Spence or go after Knighton or Melton for the Dline. You could even go the safety route and grab Byrd if Melton or Knighton don't make sense. Thoughts???

hard to argue that the oline is more of a weakness than the dline..its about equal

take the BPA and go from there

I did want O-Line first but with the new defense I won't be mad if we draft D in te first. Would still like to go round 2 O-Line.

I don't think we will be able to trade down for Warmack though, I think he will go earlier.

It sounds good in premise but Warmack won't be there in the '20s, Cooper may not be either.

I like the draft strategy, take the BPA unless we already are set at that position.

I think that before the injuries started to mount the D was actually a strenghth. The Dline can get an upgrade by picking up a starter in the middle via FA and depth in later rounds.

That was the thought with DeCastro last year and he fell into the early 20's. Guards tend to fall because the reach for 2 or 3 QBs in Rd 1.

Remember, just because that may be what you're reading, that doesn't mean that's what the Cowboys are thinking, or what they'll end up doing.
There's always more to the story.

absolutely not

this defense is predicated on being able to get pressure w our front 4...assuming we lose spencer...our front 4 is a major weakness...even if we dont lose him, its still a weakness

It doesn't matter what direction we are going. Drafting a OL or DL in the 1st round and 2nd round is probably the right way to go. Go for the best value each round.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

A lot of good conversation in this thread. Thank you all for that.

But at this point they are both weaknesses. Draft and free agency will be key and both will help determine what we do in the other. But anyway I think we should take our best OL/DL available in the first and second round and possibly the third as well depending on how the first two rounds go.

It all starts up front on both sides of the ball. And sadly both need help.

True, it is coming from so-called people close to "sources" such a Mike Fisher, Mickey Spags, and Bryan Broaddus. I just think our LB corp in this new D and the 4 man front will be a strength when compared to the Oline!

However, the premium on the defensive line became a reality when the GM decided to change the defensive philosophy of the team from a 3-4 to a 4-3.

Does anyone here really know what an entire season of the 3-4 with a healthy team and two years under the belt of the players would produce?

But instead of seeing how that went a self inflicted wound of scheme change was forced on the team, thus causing the need to acquire defenders to fit that mold.

And now Dallas will have a couple of seasons of learning this defense and making it second nature when the offensive line was the issue.

Of course the GM think the scrubs he hired last off season will miraculously become stable and consistent with a full off-season and training camp.

Like they never had those before when they were revealing their lack of talent elsewhere.

Jerry used to say you have to keep your powder dry.

Evidently that has changed.

Stack your board and stick to it. You don't get out of this hole by drafting needs.

We'll settle this with a good dust up.
