Default Cowboys have had “preliminary” contract talks with Spencer

Spencer has entertained the idea, and so have the Cowboys. Per Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas, the sides have had “preliminary talks” about a contract that would keep Spencer in Big D. An alternative to a long-term deal would be franchise tagging Spencer for the second straight season, although that would cost the Cowboys a guaranteed $10.6 million.

Agent Jordan Woy expects the sides to resume negotiations in February, leading up to the NFL Combine.

I think franchising him again probably makes the most sense. You never know somebody could offer us a first and a third. Plus if we resigned him now we would be buying high. Makes sense to see if he can duplicate last year one more time before committing a large amount of guaranteed money. Especially given the scheme change.

I've always been pro-Spencer and would not be that upset if we did sign him long term. I just think it would be an enormous waste to let him walk for nothing but a late round comp pick.

if somehow we can afford him at the franchise tag then i would pay him that and see if spencer can play defensive end at a high level. i would like to see him back but at the right contract. he turns 30 next season so his best years are coming to a end.

18 million over the cap, I don't see a franchise tag this year...Cowboys just probably kicking the tireslooking for a cheaper home discount....Spencer is small as a defensive end in a 4-3 and certainly not as an outside linebacker..

The Cowboys are not going to be 18M over the cap when Free Agency starts.

If they weren't willing to resign him I don't think these negotiations would be going on. You don't hear them having preliminary talks with Mike Jenkins for instance. They must think they have the resources to make a significant offer otherwise they would just be wasting time.

Maybe they intend to backload the contract and push money into later years. It could be because of the cap situation franchising Spencer is totally off the table. We shall see but apparently according to reports Kiffin liked him. Plus he could always bulk up if needed.

Anthony Spencer is a better 4/3 DE than 3/4 OLB.

Show him the money.

I think he'd be very good as a 43 DE for Kiffin. He's plenty stout against the run.

The boys will only sign him if they can get him for say $7 million a year max. I doubt that is enough.

He will want to be paid as a 4-3 DE if he stays in Dallas.

Anyone know the rules if the Cowboys were to apply the Franchise Tag if it would be as a 3-4 LB or 4-3 DE?

It's what he played as the prior year.

To small to play DE? Okay.

Spencer would be a great fit.

I think it would be terrible to sign him long term going into a system where he'll be in a new position. Franchise him and draft a replacement.
