PFF ranks Cowboys OL #22
https://www.profootballfocus.com/blo...fensive-lines/
Ranking the 2012 Offensive Lines
Khaled Elsayed | 2013/01/28
22. Dallas Cowboys (15)
PB – 26th, RB – 8th, PEN – 32nd
Stud: Never let us say we can’t be wrong. Nate Livings ( +11.3) had his most consistent year as a pro in Dallas, making a mark with his run blocking.
Dud: It may be time to admit that signing Doug Free ( -10.1) long-term just hasn’t worked out. There were too many games where he was taken to the woodshed by explosive defensive ends.
Summary: The Cowboys have put some money into their line recently, but the return just wasn’t there in 2012. Tyron Smith had an at times awkward first year at left tackle, while Mackenzy Bernadeau gave up too much pressure for an interior linemen. There is talent here, but like a lot of spots in Dallas you don’t always see it.
...posting this just because I want to cause brain hemorrhaging with the PFF haters bwaaa ha ha
(pass block - 26, run block - 8, penalties - dead last, 15th ranked last year)
The liver is EVIL! It must be PUNISHED!

I don't see how you can determine the Cowboys were #8 in run blocking, using any type of metric.

agreed, a 3.6 avg and 8 tds says that PFF are useless.

May have something to do with our low amount of runs.

Wow, Nate must have been god-awful in Cincinnati. No wonder they wanted him gone.

Yep.
The reason I think everyone should have been removed from there jobs including Jerry, Stephen and ciskowski is because of what they have done with the running game.
Its not up to nfl standards and the qb and skill positions are way too good to be this poor running the football.
Its completely unacceptable and just saying murray was hurt does not cut it for me.
They built it, they should pay the price for it.
"you may not be responsible but you will be held accountable" applies here in regards to the running game.
it should have been the catalyst to make real changes like other organizations do. Start at the top, rebuild the structure and let those people build a new program...
not here though.

Yeah, Cincinnati had a pretty good running game but its pass pro struggled at times. Honestly Cook, Costa, Smith and Livings were about what we should expect, but Free and Berny were God awful. Add killer and Parnell, plus a high pick at OG to replace Berny we should have an about average line to go into nex
t year. The only thing that will make us better is making teams actually bite our play action passes, then give Romo a chance with a 7 step drop. Remember having TO and Crayton catch those deep passes all day in '07? That is all we need...(and some more turnovers )

Agreed. I have no idea how PFF comes up with it's rankings, but it's clear they need to tweek their methodology.
In 2012 the avg NFL team had 435.2 rushing atts for 1854.7 yds (4.3/att), 96.9 rushing 1st downs and 12.5 rushing tds. Our numbers: 355 atts, 1265 yds (3.6/att), 76 1st downs and 8 tds.

I don't care what metrics they use. What idiot could possibly think that this OLine was top 10 in anything?

Remember, PFF put Bennett on their All-Pro team ahead of Witten.
Then came out later and said they'd made a mistake with their math.

My impression of PFF is that they generally overrate penalties and somewhat run blocking. They underrate pass blocking. They don't account much for scheme differences i.e. 3 step drop or 7 step drop. They don't adjust for how a defense changes with a mobile qb.
It is not an accident that #1 pass blocking offensive lines follow Peyton Manning around the league. It is no accident that Bruce Arrian's qb's make big plays but take alot of sacks and hits.

I do think it is instructive that Free was a big problem and McKenzie was bad, especially early. Also Evan Mathis went from camp fodder guy to the highest rated guard in the league. He was a McKenzie B level signing for the Eagles. That is some strong performance enhancement on their part.
