I would give Ed reed a long look, our safeties are not play makers and we have depth problems.we could work out a one year deal with him if he doesn't re-sign with the Ravens.

So what I find cureous is that this board seems a bit resistant to new blood, to change.
If the Cowboys have one long-term fault it is that we tend to keep players beyond their expiration dates. We cling to the Brookings, the Emmitts, the Ratliffs too long and they begin to descend and we keep them even longer, heralding their "work ethic" and their "leadership qualities.". Leadership qualities and work ethics and 2 dollahs will buy you an issue of Cowboys Weekly, but that publication, like Ratliff and Romo, are entities whose time half passed. Tear of indignation blind me so I end this post. . . .
We find it hard to let go and we find it difficult to accept that this team, like any team, needs a constant flow (and outflow) of talent.
[View Full Quote]Smith and Bush, while there might be cap/salary/pride problems, are certainly upgrades, yet there is resistance to even discussing it.
Just you wait: We'll keep Romo until his QB ratings fall to 70 and we will still gush that he is an A-lister. We did that with Emmitt but 2 years too late and then we played him we realized he was among the worst has-beens around. I think he got negative yards when we beat the Cardinals.
So do not hate the infusion of spectre of new talent. Embrance change and the constant work to keep our team young and most of them producers.

You are hitting two different topics.
1. Keeping players too long and making changes.
2. Are Smith and Bush upgrades?
I have no problems with making changes. I don't think Smith and Bush are clearly upgrades especially considering the price tag that they are probably seeking. Cost does matter in these situations. Dallas can find upgrades at better values out there.
Alex Smith has a career passer rating of under 60% and a career passer rating of 79. We can worry about Romo's passer rating dipping below 70 at some point, but that doesn't mean Smith would be the answer. I would rather go with a rookie as Romo's eventual replacement. I don't think of Smith as a good backup.
People make the claims that Felix and Demarco are unreliable because of injury problems. Reggie Bush has those same problems. He has been injured just about every year he has been in the league. I think Dallas can do better when searching for another running back and can also find a cheaper option.

You frame it well.
As for the 2 eliments of 1 and 2, they are intertwined.
We need to let go of many players and bush and smith are part of the answer as far as injecting new blood and talent here.
I am not saying Smith and Bush are the answers to all problems, but the beginning to some. Certainly, there may be better prospects at half the cost, but the big thing is to wheel and deal, the way Jimma used to.
I like the constant infusion of talent. We just do not do it enough as other teams do it. Brady James, Brookings, Ratliff, Hatcher, Jenkins -- these are players who other teams would have cut 2 years ago, maybe longer than that. Yet we have this sentimental thing that allows only a few to be let go ever year. I don't like that.
Give me a team that has constant new flow of talent and constant outflow of hasbeens like Ratliff, James (he gone, yes) etc.

So we're suppose to overpay and trade draft picks for two backups?

Spike Lee doesn't have movie failures so are you saying this team doesn't have holes?

Who say we are supposed to overpay and burn draft picks? Show me where I said that or show me who said that. I would be interested to know

Box office failures. Spike is no Speilberg. Like the NFL, moviedom depends on box office receipts, the old bottom line. And this team, as others do, half many holes.

This in spades. While I do believe that Smith would fit whatever offense we would run for Romo (WC?), I pretty much agree with your reasoning.
The thing about backs is that you really need to view them in 4 year windows. If your going to get one as a backup, I'd rather we get one that is at the beginning of the window as opposed to the end.
