IRVING, Texas – Tight end John Phillips had recent surgery on his left shoulder, but the soon-to-be free agent is expected to be ready for the spring workouts.
Phillips is the third Cowboy to undergo off-season surgery. Linebacker DeMarcus Ware had right shoulder surgery earlier in the month and is looking at a long rehab that could keep him out until training camp. Cornerback Sterling Moore had minor left knee surgery for a cleanup.

Do we know when he was injured? I've forgotten if it is known.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

Time to move on from Phillips. Too many injuries, and doesn't seem he ever really regained his play from his knee injury.
Hanna will be in front of him come TC anyway. They signed Cochart who got caught up in a numbers game last year. He may not be the answer for a 3rd TE. But a blocking TE is needed. This was not Phillips, never was, and is not Hanna, as he seems more of a pass catching TE.

Yeah, this seems like a foregone conclusion. With Witten and Hanna, there's a huge need for a blocking TE, and Phillips ain't it.

I was excited his rookie year but since then the shine has left.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

This, to me, is the greatest myth perpetrated by Cowboy fans. Phillips never was anything good. Yet folks made excuses for him all through 2011 ... "oh, he's still recovering from his knee surgery" -- despite that fact that having been injured before the season began that he had ample time to recover. Then leading up to 2012 "oh, he's set to break out this year!"
He never was anything special. People liked him because he wasn't Bennett and built him up because of it.

^^^^This. Other than his UVA connections with the Garrett family, he had no business spending this much time in Dallas. Same thing for Ogletree...another kid from UVA who Dallas hung on to FAR too long!

If not at TE, can he be retained as a receiver since he's really good at that? If he can play special teams he may have value as #3/#4 WR who can work the middle of the field. At a height of 6-5 and weighing 250 lbs he'll have a great advantage over nickel CBs and LBs.

Trent Dilfer: "Tony [Romo] has greatness in him. I think when you talk to other people that really play the quarterback position, there's a few guys that really have incredible greatness in them, and Tony is one of them. I think the issue here is he needs more help from his teammates. I think they are not nearly as talented as people say they are, from 1 to 53. I'm talking about the total roster.”

Phillips was the other half of one of my favorite plays of 2012.
Witten was the target for 150 passes. Not sure what the budget is for pass distribution, but I wouldn't think many are going to other TEs. I want balls not going to Witten to be thrown to Murray.

I doubt very much that his UVA connections made any difference. We tried to replace him over the off-season. He likely would have been off the roster had we signed an FA

I wish him well however I seriously doubt he's back in Dallas.
