Default Draft A Mobile QB Late For Scout Team?

Listening to the draft show on the mothership, and someone called in asking if they saw the Cowboys taking a mobile QB late in the draft (ie Darrelle Robinson), that could run the read option for the scout team. Seems like an interesing idea. Wouldn't give much during a game, but might be a big help to defense in preparing for the game.

Or is there maybe someone on the open market they could bring in for that?
There's always more to the story.

Very good point that I had not contemplated. Picking up a Denard Robinson in the later rounds could be more valuable than any other draft pick. Great way to practice against a similarly skilled QB as he who shall not be named. Reminds me of what the Lakers did against AI and the Sixers in the 2001 finals.

Seems like a wasted pick if you never really anticipate the guy will play.

You're essentially committing a guy to the squad for a couple of seasons and then letting him go because I don't think players can be on the squad for longer than a few years.

All that while, you have other guys who may be worth developing but you have to let go because you've used a pick on a guy specifically for that spot.

Waste of a pick, especially since we don't have a 7th. I'm sure there are plenty of guys dying for a shot in the NFL who could do the job well enough. The main thing we would need to practice against is the pistol/option run. Not like we need the guy to be throwing accurate passes 20 yards down the field in practice.

Agreed. Horrible idea. It ranks right up there with Jerry's brilliant special teams and backups draft classes.

We'll settle this with a good dust up.

No way! The purpose of drafting a player is having hope they can contribute game day. Just use a WR/DB on PS to simulate game speed.

Nope not to draft. Undrafted free agent is the way to go. BJ Daniels is a project I'd like for them to take on. He physically resembles Russell Wilson but not a polished passer. He had an underwhelming junior and senior season in college because USF had coaching instability.

Honestly, he should've transferred outta there to save his career once Leavitt was fired.

It's not the worst idea. There are many athletic collegiate qbs that project better as a wr. We can draft such a player and hope he develops as a wr and a contributor on special teams. In the meantime, he could fill in from time to time on the scout team the week prior to facing a mobile qb.

Oh, duh...I should've realized you meant Denard. Instead, I spent half an hour googling Darrelle Robinson thinking he's a small school prospect that's flying under the radar.....

In Denard's case, I'd have to say no. He'll go too high and the type of option qb I'd want to run the scout team would have to be a late round pick or udfa.
