Default Super Bowl day mock

Not going to do anything fancy here, just the picks according to what I think we will do.

Round 1- Sharrif Floyd DT Florida- Perfect gap penetrating DT for the tampa 2. He's got exceptional feet and athleticism for a guy with his frame (6'3 305). This kid is gonna remind old Monte of his former buddy Warren Sapp.

Round 2- Phillip Thomas S Fresno State- This is the playmaking safety we have lacked for a long time. Thomas has the versatility and size to play either safety position at 6'1 210 with good enough speed to keep up in coverage. Nose for the ball with good hands to make the plays. Having a good safety who can actually make plays will do wonders for our D.

Round 3- Brian Schwenke C/G Cal- Yeah I know everybody is going to hate that we don't address the o-line until the 3rd, but Jerry Jones is still our GM and I'm trying to be realistic. With that said, Schwenke is a good one with versatility who also fits the scheme we are trying to run well. Only 1 year starting at C, but that seems to be his best fit at the next level. Although him playing guard is not out of the question at all either. Smart kid with good feet and enough strength to handle most blockers. An improvement of Costa/Cook right away in my opinion.

Round 4- Gerald Hodges OLB Penn State- Right now we lack a 3rd LB for the new 4-3 scheme so we dip back into the Linebacker U pool and pick another stud. Hodges has enough speed to play side line to side line (actually returned some punts for PSU), and if he gets his hands on the ball carrier they usually go down. Hodges is one of the better wrap up tacklers in this draft class in my opinion. Would be a nice compliment to Lee and Carter. I see A LOT of Navorro Bowman in him.

Round 5- Jordan Mills OT La Tech- I believe Free should/will be cut and Parnell will be the starter at RT. I think Mills would be a nice developmental swing tackle who could develop into a potential starter. Was 1st team all WAC RT last year on one of the better offenses in the nation. Big kid at 6'5 315 with enough strength to handle playing RT and decent feet.

Round 6- Quanterus Smith DE Western Kentucky- Dominant small school pass rusher who tore his ACL this season. 12 sacks and 18.5 TFL before he got hurt. Give him a year to redshirt and put on about 10 lbs and I think he could have some real potential in 2014.

Notes:
-I think there are plenty of capable RB's in FA that can back up just fine.
-If it were up to me I'd go guard in the 1st or 2nd no doubt, but I really think Jerry is going to stick with his prized FA signings from last year.
-I like our WR's and I'm not willing to cut Miles yet.

Brian Schwenke is a guy that I've been reviewing. He looked good a the Senior Bowl. I've reviewed him in 2 complete college games so far.

He does seem to get the job done for the most part. His body and technique is not a thing of beauty. He tends to flail around a bit. He makes great efforts to get to the 2nd level...sometimes successfully and sometimes not.

I think he will play in the NFL, but I'm not certain that he is significantly different than what the Cowboys already have on the roster. The 3rd round seems a bit early for him, IMO.

I love the first pick. After that, I'm kind of lukewarm on it.

I know some really like Thomas at S, but there are other S who I like better. I really like Elam but he will probably be gone by the time we pick in the 2nd, and I really like Cyprien, who I would love for us to draft in the 3rd, or even 2nd if he tests well enough. For all I know the team really likes Thomas though, and that is what really matters in the end. I trust Kiffin to know which safety fits best in his defense, so I will be happy with whichever S they end up with.

I like Schwenke but I think we end up going with what we already have at C (Costa, Bernadeau, Cook). I actually am expecting a S or an OLB in round 3.

I do like Hodges a good bit. He is a solid player for this defense if you are looking at SLB. If they go WLB and put Carter on the strongside, I really like Khaseem Green and Zaviar Gooden a whole lot. Green will probably go too early for us though.

Nice job on the mock, even if it isn't 100% what I'd do. I see what you were doing and it is a solid job.

After watching the Super Bowl and the playoffs as a whole....we need to stop all talk of needing a dominent defense. There is no team in the NFL with a dominant, let alone very good defense.

The big bad 49ers gave up 30 something to the Packers, 20 something to the Falcons and 27 to the Ravens.

The Ravens have been up a down all year and gave up 29 to the 49ers.

You need a dominant offense to compete in the NFL, the rules dictate that.

With that said here is what I do.

1. Don't sign Spencer. Use that money to sign Levitre from Buffalo and a good DE. What it would cost to sign Spencer, we could have two players.

1st round - Lane Johnson - Tackle Oklahoma
2nd round - Barrett Jones - C/G - Alambama
3rd round - Cypeian (sp) - safety - Florida International
4th round - Jonathan Franklin - RB - UCLA
5th round - BPA
6th round - BPA

Starting OL - Smith/Livings/Jones or Costa or Berny/Levitre/Johnson - back ups Parnell, Jones, Costa, Berny
Starting DL - Ware/Ratliff/Hatcher/Crawford - backups Lissemore, Price, Bass FA

Our defense minus injuries is good enough to compete. Going to a 4-3 I think will create more turnovers.

Our OL is not good enough as is to do that. We have got to fix the OL to have a chance. Watching the playoffs and Super Bowl, should have opened some eyes.

The Niners defense got them back in the game.

This is a seriously flawed line of thinking IMO. Just because points are up, doesn't mean defense isn't important, it's just because teams are passing all the time now.

Look at the teams above the league average line and below the average line in points per game. Really not a whole lot of argument left after looking at that. Can you win without an absolutely dominant #1 D? Sure, but you aren't getting very far with a bad or even below average D either.

I think both teams looked superior to Dallas in that when it came down to nut cutting time in the 3rd and 4th quarter, both offenses and defenses made big plays.
That period of time is when we seem to lack the killer instinct that the more dominant teams have. For this reason, I think we need significant upgrades on both sides of the ball. O-line, D-line, and Safety.
