I still think that was one of the most convoluted kills in the entire series, i.e. the desiccated zombie holding a full-grown man down and with one hand tearing open his abdomen.
But it seems the whole Darabont thing creeped up and Dale's character was removed.
I think that's why the Herschel character made it off the farm alive.

Was Dale suppose to lose his leg instead of Herschel?

That was Allen who lost his leg in the graphic novel.

Dale DID have his leg amputated in the comics and in the prison. As soon as I saw hershel get that I knew they moved it from Dale's character.
Later in the comics dale gets bit again and then he is taken by the cannibals who take off his other leg and eat it. He wakes up and starts laughing telling them that he was infected.
So he loses both legs.

The death of Dale is my absolute least favorite part of the show thus far. I was by far the most saddened by his death out of any of the deaths in the whole show. There have been some very sad deaths, Sophia and Lori, but to me the loss of Dale was the worst.

That's a pretty good list of sad deaths.
On my list I would need to add the death (re-death?) of the "bicycle girl" zombie from the first episode. It wasn't so much she was put down but Rick saying, "I'm sorry this happened to you" before he did it.
To me that was the stage setter for his personna. And it was the first "punch to the gut" that the undead were just regular folks at one point.

It's even more so if you watch the season 2 webisode online where you see who that lady was and how she came to be there. It makes it so much more sad.
And I completely agree that it's the first 'big' moment in what you will come to know as the character of Rick. It set the tone for exactly the kind of character he was going to be.

An OK episode.
Really not much in the way of high-points.
I'm finding this episodes that are Andrea-focused kinda drag.
Michonne did double her previous word count in this one episode though...

You knew her character was going to start to develop more personality at some point.

Can't really disagree with any of that. It was nice to get a glimpse of Michonne's emotions, and hearing her call Andrea a "friend" tells us that she's at least human
I don't like what is going on with Rick at all. He's so insane most of the time, that when he is in control it seems weird. They've really blown it imo. How is he so hell bent on killing the governor, but he allows Merle to stay? Doesn't want to give up being the leader when Carl says so, but walks away when crises arise? I understand that those kinds of things are necessary to describe his character, but at some point, it gets to be too much.
While I think any scene featuring Darrel is the strength of the show, I didn't like the sudden turn of him becoming the leader of Merle. Merle has been too stubborn to do that, and all of a sudden he does? I don't buy it...the characters develop too quickly for a plot that is developing to slowly, and there are major holes because of it.
And where did that family come from?...How is this the first time in the whole series that a new family is introduced, and they just disappear?
I really liked the dialogue between Axel and Carol, even though I'm not a big fan of her. It was refreshing to see something a bit lighter for a change. Of course, they immediately blasted him in the fast
I might bash it, but I thought this was a better episode than previous ones. If nothing else, there was a level of entertainment that has been lacking.
