He could be a bust as soon as he signs the deal OR prove to be one of Jerry's best decisions ever. THAT'S NOT THE POINT!!!!!!!!!! You based your argument on the fact that you believed Spencer was already or about to turn 30 this season, as if he was no longer in his prime or something.
How 'bout this then? Do you resign him with the risk he doesn't live up to the contract? OR, do you let him walk, he signs somewhere else and plays at an elite level for at least the 1st 3 years of his deal, we find out Crawford just ain't ready, and then have to invest in another DE next year? Is that a better question?

I can't provide you with some definitive statistic, but it's pretty clear that once NFL players turn 30, they've reached their prime, with the exception of players in the trenches (OL and DL). It's definitely possible that you'll see linemen play well into their mid 30s, but in my OPINION, I don't see Spencer being one of those players. Spencer does many things well, but he has been playing a position that requires a ton of contact and wear and tear.
Also, this is the ONLY big time contract he'll receive, so I have no doubt he'll try to cash in. If I were Jerry, I would let Spencer walk, start Crawford or Hatcher, and draft a DL in the 1st or 2nd round.
