Although this is kind of tragic, I think it is really sweet that people have the ability to blast meteors out of the sky

The sound of the thing is ridiculous.
There's a video of a guy looking at the trail of it and 30 seconds in you hear the explosion. I don't see how it could be that long after it passed him based on how close the trail looked.

I read somewhere this morning that the Russians denied that story, saying it wasn't possible to do that. Which seems like the case to me.

Wow, and I was just reading about the asteroid that's coming tonight. Those things could wipe us all out. Strange. I just found this story and wonder if it could have something to do with the asteroid or if it's totally irrelevant.

Very lucky that it was not a Meteorite. According to reports, from the Russian Academy of Sciences, that meteor weighed in the area of 10 tons and was traveling at approximately 45,000 mph or like Mach 60.
Had that been a solid mass (Meteorite) rather then a Meteor, which is not a solid mass, that could have been devastating, especially in a populated area.

It is a different piece. I was curious and read about it. It's not related at all, but interesting and coincidental nonetheless.

Speed of sound is around 1000 ft/s. That thing could have easily been 30,000 ft in the sky.

Near Earth Object (NEO) - Near Earth Objects are asteroids or comets that have orbits around the Sun that bring them close to the Earth.
The actual definition of an NEO is a comet or asteroid whose orbit brings it close to Earth’s orbit.
Asteroid - A relatively small, inactive body, composed of rock, carbon or metal, which is orbiting the Sun.
Comet - A relatively small, sometimes active object, which is composed of dirt and ices. Comets are characterised by dust and gas tails when in proximity to the Sun. Far from the Sun it is difficult to distinguish an asteroid from a comet.
Meteoroid - A small particle from an asteroid or comet orbiting the Sun.
Meteor - A meteoroid that is observed as it burns up in the Earth’s atmosphere – a shooting star.
Meteorite - A meteoroid that survives its passage through the Earth’s atmosphere and impacts the Earth’s surface.
