Default Change in D scheme

I know BP ran 3-4 all his life until he came to Dallas. This is our transition yr to 3-4. Anyone think our D will struggle at the beginning because of the change and number of rookies playing/starting for our D?

I know SD had a seamless transition but then they had a new coodinator who ran 3-4. Zimmer has never done that in the past before. Anyone concerned about this issue.

Not concerned! You can teach a player how to play the 3-4 I have no doubt the Cowboys defensive staff will be able to pick up the 3-4 as well. This is not rocket science and these coaches have been exposed to football most of their lives. It is just not that hard of a defense to understand

I think BP knows enough about it to eliminate any concern over the switch. Zimmer is widely considered a smart guy (even though some haven't liked his scheme), and he has been learning the 3-4. Any shortcomings he has will be negated by the knowledge and hands-on approach of BP.

I think there will be a learning curve. I intially expected something in the range of 75 to 25 or 80 to 20 on the fronts played, with the 43 being the base. Now, I think the ratio will be much more even. In truth, I did not expect the Cowboys to be able to aquire quality talent at vertually every pick that fit the 34. I expected it would take longer to aquire the talent to implement the 34. Not the case. I think we probably have enough talent after this draft to play a 34 and have adaquate reserves as well.

Having said all of this, I think it will take time to make the change. I still believe we will be a base 43 team this year but I expect us to use the 34 much more. I also expect the ratio to be a mix of something like 60/40 with the balance increasing twords the end of the season. By next year, I expect to be a base 34 team. Nothing is in stone and my opinions are just that, opinion, but I have to say that I'm extremely impressed with the way we worked the draft. I can't believe we were able to aquire so much talent for the 34 in just one draft.

I have this gut feeling BP will completely turn over the offensive reigns to Payton so he can concentrate on D. If so, they will be solid to start the season and only get better.

i'd be more worried about staying status quo, struggling all year and wearing down in the 2nd half of every game we play.

no worries for 2005 now
