Default Moore: Despite cap limits, Dallas could re-sign Spencer, have $$$ to spend

http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/dal...e-to-spend.ece

Cowboys beat writer David Moore answered reader questions during a live chat Tuesday. Here are some highlights:

Given the Cowboys salary cap problems and the Anthony Spencer situation, can Jerry pull it off by signing him and then getting a couple of decent free agents?

David Moore: Given what contracts are restructured and what players are cut, the Cowboys could sign Spencer and still have the money to spend on some free agents. But I don't think you'll see the $50 million contract in free agency like you saw last year with Brandon Carr. It will be a level or two down from that type of investment.

You don’t know what you don’t know.

i think most fans know we can sign spencer and a couple of middle of the road free agents. the contracts we have were designed to be restructured just for this. i also think if we cut free and start parnell we should sign a ot. and because there are so many going to be on the market this year you should be able to get a vet reasonable this year. i could see a guy signing a 1 year deal to hit the market again next year when there are'nt so many tackles.
the question then becomes who else do you look at in free agency or the draft

I think you know that. I know that and xwalker certainly know that.

However most of the folks on this board buy the alarmist "we are 20 mill over the cap!" stuff that you hear on sports talk radio.

No doubt, the alrmists have started become irritating.

Howver, I strongly suspect David Moore and many other writers who are also generally far less informed that many CBZers has been skimming data from this website.

I would look at the following positions, but that's not to say we will find value there. We may, or we may not.

On the DL, I would look for a rotational player. I'd part ways with Spears, and Coleman is a FA anyway. There are a few guys out there.

I'd look at some insurance at RB if a guy who is relatively cheap comes available. Perhaps Ivory from the Saints? That doesn't prohibit me from getting yet another RB late in the draft (Round 4, 5 or 6).

I'd probably cut Connor and see if I can pick up someone more effective.

If I was going to spend a bit more money, I'd look for a RG and move Berny to OC to compete with Costa, etc.

I think Garrett will also look for a blocking TE type.

And if another L Robinson comes available on the cheap in FA, why not take a look?

I don't think it pays for the writers to be informed. It does pay for them to write about "dead money" and "kicking the can" and "future cap hell"'

I would rather let Spencer walk, cut Free, sign Freeney, and Vollmer.

I have no doubt that we can resign Spencer and sign a few middle tier free agents if we choose to. That has never been the issue. I am concerned that resigning Spencer (who I believe isn't one of the ten best players on this roster) is more of an upper middle tier player player ranking about 15th-20th on the roster in terms of importance. If we resign him we should not overpay to keep him.

Giving Spencer a market level deal (which will be an artificially inflated number compared to his actual worth) is going to put us up tighter against the cap in years to come. If that puts me into the category of those you call "alarmist" then count me as one of the alarmists.

Count me as one of the guys who thinks that resigning Spencer will more likely than not be a mistake either in terms of he isn't as good as what we are paying to keep him, or that the opportunity cost of resigning him is going to cost us a player who is more valuable later on, or both. I tend to think it will be both.

I am actually an American. But I have been working in London for a long time.

Unfortunately I don't know many Cowboys fans here. From what I can make out teams like GB, Pittsburgh are more popular. That probably has to do with the relative lack of success the Cowboys have had the last 15 years.

All the Alarmists on this board are funny because we are always 10-20 million over the cap every year.
For those of you that were "offended" by last 2 sigs this one is for you.
