Not sure how long his deal is, but if he's under contract here we don't have to let him go.
Ivy League

Jason Garrett offense rank minus Tony Sparano: 18, 14, 7, 15, 15

Did they do away with being unable to block promotional moves?

I know they could block lateral moves but if he gets a promotion, I'm not sure you can tell him no.

In any event, I don't think he took the Dallas job because he specifically wants to be the DC in Dallas.

I think it had more to do with familiarity with Kiffen and given his choice, I think he'd likely go anywhere else and coach for Lovie.

He's an older guy himself and probably doesn't see much of an opportunity to be a head coach again after his abysmal stint in Detroit. For him, the "right" place may not be the highest paying or the most prominent. He seems to be a guy who values familiarity and possesses a strong sense of loyalty. Exactly the type of guy you would want on your staff so long as you are the guy he's loyal to because you know what he brings and you don't have to worry about him taking off for greener pastures. You can't really put a price on being able to work with someone you consider to be your best friend both inside and outside the game.

Years ago. Way back in '06 Sean Payton wanted to hire Sparano for OC and Parcells didn't let him go. You don't have to let them go unless it's for HC.

I thought their adjustment was in not allowing the Assistant HC title be valid for hiring a coordinator to be a coordinator.

I dunno but I'm guessing you're probably right.

Because Marinelli was a Lovie Smith guy.. he had no allegiance to the Bears.. Once Lovie left the Bears Marinelli saw no reason to stay on the staff.

I'm more excited about this upcoming offseason and season than I've been in awhile.

Because he will eventually be the DC here. And the Bears coaching staff will basically be rebuilt, so he may thought time to move on, and as he said, without Smith there as head coach, one of his best friends. Added to the reason to make that choice.

Sometimes the position isn't what it's all about.
