Steven Jackson to void final year of contract, test free agency
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on February 26, 2013, 12:35 AM EST
According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Jackson will void the final year of his contract and elect to test the free agent market. By choosing to void his deal, Jackson is leaving $7 million on the table he was scheduled to make next season. However, it was unlikely the Rams were going to be able to keep him on the roster at that price.
Jackson will hit free agency for the first time in his nine-year NFL career on March 12. The Rams career rushing leader has rushed for over 1,000 yards in eight of his nine seasons and rushed for 10,135 yards and 56 touchdowns for his career.

As a backup, I'd do it...depending on how his physical checks out.

I wouldn't be surprised if he contacts us. He was so upset that we traded out of the pick and the rams took him that year

Not surprising.
I think he'd be a good fit in DAL, though I don't know what the market for him will end up being. I know we were his favorite team growing up, and we've got a need for a smart, hard-running durable RB. At his age and mileage, he's probably going to sign somewhere for a reasonable contract where he expects to split time...
When asked whether Jason Garrett is the right head coach for this team: "I don't think there is anyone else that could. I think he is an unbelievable coach. We've responded to him and he has made us better football players, better people. If you watch us I think we play with a certain relentless spirit." --Sean Lee

That makes sense, too. I guess it depends on the role he wants for the next few years.

This guy will fit on any team in the league...regardless of what they already have at RB.
I'd be all for bringing him in if healthy.

I'll take him only if the contract were friendly. RB's are simply too replaceable these days to break the piggy bank.

Yep. That's the ticket. It's hard to get a former star to understand the concept that he's gone from an elite player to a commodity player whose contribution to a roster can effectively be replaced by a mid-round pick.
That said, if SJ gets that, he's supposed to be just a fantastic locker-room guy, and he's someone I'd love to see carrying the load if DM goes down mid-season again. Generally speaking, you want to go with youth where you can get it, but at the same time, there's a lot to be said for the right mix of veteran players, and SJ is one of those right kinds of guys.

Running Backs in 2013 have no business being first round picks or having big money invested in them. 30+ running backs should have little-to-no money invested in them.

I don't think anybody is expecting him to get a big contract at his age and mileage. STL was trying to get something done with him, and he ended up opting-out rather than getting let go, so he's probably already got the framework of a deal on the table. He's either looking for slightly more than they were willing to offer, or a better competitive situation for his last season or two in the NFL.
