Look at these numbers......I am sure that it pissed off the player's union.....But, he knows that taking more only means that others get less.

Romo and Flacco should be listening.....And for our sake, I hope that Romo does something similar....Though, it is hard to fault him for taking the money.

Tom Brady took a huge step today to ensure he'll retire a Patriot, agreeing to a three-year contract extension that will keep him under center for New England through the 2017 season, when he will be 40 years old.

For the second time in his illustrious career, Brady is doing something players in this day and age simply do not do: As he did in 2005, Brady, a league source told SI.com, is signing a contract with New England that will pay him significantly less money than the market will bear, in large part to help the Patriots stay competitive for the next five seasons.

Amazingly, according to the source, the deal is for an eye-poppingly conservative $27 million, which is less than half his worth by any measure.

The extension will pay Brady a $3 milion signing bonus immediately, in addition to salaries of $7 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016 and $9 million in 2017. Brady told Sports Illustrated five years ago he wanted to play until he was 40, at least, and this will accomplish that. He turns 40 on Aug. 3, 2017.

The upshot of the deal is to give the Patriots massive cap relief in a flat-cap era. He was due to count on the New England salary cap $43.6 million in 2013 and 2014. Now, his cap numbers will add up to $28.6 million in the next two years, a savings of $15 million in cap dollars at a time the Patriots have free agents they want to sign to help keep the team atop the AFC East, which they have dominated since Brady took over at quarterback in 2001.

How many of those years will he even see starting at age 37. Seems like it was just to make cap space.

I believe that he was set to have a cap number of $22M the next 2.....So, he got the third year guaranteed and that offsets it.....Still, it does say something about him.

Thats why Tom Brady is the best QB of this era. Because he thinks team first. Sure he's made plenty of money in deals outside of football and football. But he didnt have to do this. If NE wouldnt pay him some other team would jump to.

Manning or Brees would never do this.

A lot of people like to bash TB, but he is the modern day Troy Aikman (constantly reworking his deals to help the team) AFAIC.

This puts some pressure on Romo (and to a lesser extent, Flacco), but it is apples and oranges IMO.

Brady can rationally argue that doing this could potentially give Belichick the flexibility to add one or two vets to put NE over the top and give Brady that elusive 4th SB.

I do not see how Romo could come to the same conclusion if he is being honest about the state of the team.

Romo won't do the same because Jerry has made it clear he puts Romo's protection at a lower level of importance than say... tightend.

This is why I'll always respect TB. Plays hard. Cares. Great QB and will do anything for franchise and team. Heck his wife probably makes more than him.

You really think if he's still playing at 37-40 that he won't get a new contract? This is likely just to help with cap space for the time being.

No i dont think he will ask for one. The guy took a 6 yr 60 mil contract, when Manning got a 14 mil per yr deal. Brady wanted to do this.

Love watching TB lose but this is what makes him the best QB in the game.. Takes less money for the good of the team, Most competative guy on the roster. And hottest wife.. Life is good..

Nice move by the Pats and Brady.

Brady get three more years of guaranteed dollars and clears a TON of cap room for his team to remain contenders.

Don't take the bait and try to compare this to Romo's situation. Brady is 35 and Romo is 32. When Brady was early 30s he signed a monster deal at the time...but to his credit, even then he did not try to break the bank.
I suspect Romo will be thinking along those lines (Brady's last deal, not this one); a strong contract that does not cripple the team, but is still fair.

Of course, Brady's wife makes maore than him anyway.

Exactly the two situations are very different. TB is getting a short, cap related extension that he might not even see. Romo younger and is getting a completely new contract (though cap is certainly part of it). I'm sure he's a great dude but this extension isn't really different than the 3 phony years they tacked onto Romo's current contract to push the money back.

This is just one of those rare things with a big time athlete that you can't help but love. The guy wants nothing but to be competitive and win. He's made his money, he knows it, so it's not nearly as important to him as the winning. I love this attitude.
