DMN: Jerry Jones says QB Tony Romo ‘can handle a porous offensive line’
By Rainer Sabin / Reporter

Jones, the Cowboys owner and general manager, didn’t offer a clear picture. He said, “We very likely through a combination of free agency or this draft get serious about another guard/center type.”
And he did say that moving right tackle to Doug Free to an interior position has been discussed, but only if the Cowboys decide that they have enough quality players who can be slotted at the bookend spots.
Yet Jones wouldn’t commit to making any sweeping changes in the offensive line. He even said that he could see Phil Costa be the center “for several years” if the Cowboys judge the players flanking him to be above average.
And he added that rookie guard Ron Leary has “got a shot” to have an increased role.
Jones is hopeful the unit will perform better next season, but he seems to recognize its limitations and it’s part of the reason why the Cowboys want to make another long-term commitment to quarterback Tony Romo, whose contract expires after the 2013 campaign.
“If you’re going to have a guy…that can handle a porous offensive line, it’s Tony,” Jones said.

as long as Jerruh keeps downplaying the trenches this team will be mediocre. The Dallas team of the 90's was dominant at the offensive line so it baffles me how Jerruh won't upgrade the line.

Jerry watched Jimmy build those lines with little top tier talent. Thus, he can do the same...or will go down trying.

I hope this is merely draft day diversion.

hahaha. People wanted to see the quotes, well here they are. Do you feel better now that you have the context?
We need wins, and that's all we need. I don't give a damn about anyone on this roster over wins. I'd trade Ware, Lee and Dez if it meant more wins.

The key word being build, Jerry has yet to build anything in the trenches on either side of the ball.

Jones general comment is correct. As bad as this oline has looked, Tony has made this line look much better than it is due to his mobility and escapability (sp?).
However what he is overlooking is the number of Injuries Tony has taken over the years do to the bad play of the Oline and his needing to move around.
If your QB is getting hurt every year because of the Oline...You should no longer be able to use one of your favorite terms...Romo Friendly.

Yeah Jerry is right, but you don't want to put you QB in that position to run for his life just to make plays. You want to make his job as easy as possible. If Jerry is going to maintain his stance on the importance of the offensive line, then the best thing that the team can do is to upgrade the offensive line scouting department so that the team is getting the best possible player at whatever point the team chooses to bring in offensive line players. If the team isn't concerned with spending large resources (i.e., high draft picks, big time free agents) on the offensive line, then the scouting department has to hit on steals in the draft and find hidden gems in later rounds, or get the right players that can excel in the system.
It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.

This is why Romo will always be looking up at the Eli's and now the Flacco's .... God forbid what other equal or unequal QB will be next

...the oline is hot garbage and now the dline is garbage because Spencer isn't coming back (would've been a solid 4/3 end) and Brent is gone for 2013 and maybe beyond. It could be argued that the dline is worse than the oline for god sakes. What a mess.
