DeMarcus VS. "big school"
I am quoting this off of another board so if it was your info, claim it.
Quote:
VS. Marshall (344-lb. OT Nate Griffin) - 3 sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 2 pressures
VS. Missouri (QB Brad Smith) - 4 tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble
VS. South Carolina - 3 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pressure
VS. LSU (330-lb. OT Andrew Whitworth) - 4 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 4 pressures, 1 forced fumble
BTW, 5.5 of Merriman's 8.5 sacks came against weaker teams: Northern Illinois (1), Temple (1), Duke (1), Wake Forest (2.5) ... He was shut out against Florida St, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and NC State.

Don't wish to kill anyone's buzz as I'm not anti-Ware. I've said it before several times - Ware was a DE and Merriman was mostly a LB. Do y'all understand Merriman wasn't rushing the passer even 1/3 of the time that Ware was and yet he still finished with just 2 fewer sacks.
DEs in almost all cases get more sacks than LBs. This is not news. They also typically get more tackles for a loss. One of the main job responsibilities of a DE is to beat the OL and get to the QB or RB. (2004 Dallas Cowboys defense excluded of course.) As the OL sets up behind the line of scrimmage, a DE should typically get his fair share of opportunities for tackles for a loss. And since the are rushing the passer on a fairly consistent basis, DEs will have significantly more opportunities for QB hurries since LBs can only get a "hurry" when they blitz and may not blitz at all in some games.
Merriman had little impact vs nationally ranked Fla St and VA Tech for whatever reason, but he was no more shut out vs UVA or NC State than Ware was vs LSU.
NC St - 16 tackles (9 solo), 1 Pass Defensed, 1.5 TFL.
UVA - 10 tackles (6 solo), 1 Fumble recovered, 1 TFL.
Ware meanwhile was shut out vs Middle Tennessee St (2 tackles, .5 TFL), Idaho (2 tackles, 2 pressures), and New Mexico St (4 tackles, 1 TFL). 6 of his 10.5 sacks came in 2 games against weak teams. That means he had 4.5 sacks over the remaining 10 games.
By the way, Marshall and Northern Illinois both play in the MAC. Why is Marshall strong but NIU is weak? Guess which team went 9-3 last year, beat Troy 34-21 in their Bowl and held Ware sackless.
In any case, people will get to see both players soon enough and actually form an opinion on them based on observation. Should be a novel phenomenon.

You can make the same exact case for many premiere players at the college level...
Many times the star players act as decoy and let other players get the job done...
Good research on your numbers... but many times numbers can't relay the game situation or the opponent's scheme/gameplan...
That being said... I still think we got a premiere player... he has nothing but upside...
I hope he is mentioned among our greats 20 years down the road...
