Roster Analysis (Long)
Its the down time of the football season. After the draft and the post draft mini-camp and before training camp. Its the time we all hate. So, I decided to do a little roster analysis and try to guess who might make the 53 man roster to help wile away the football dog-days.
That proved to be a lot harder than Id originally thought. Every time I tried to keep one young, promising player, I had to cut another. Pretty soon it became evident: Were going to be cutting a lot of good players this year. Many of the guys we cut are going to be playing for other teams this year. Im glad it isnt a decision that I have to make.
Let me say this before I go any further: Im a glass is half full type of guy. I cant help it. I know I usually look at things in a best case scenario
but thats just me. I really try to be unbiased and not look at things through blue tinted glasses. I probably dont succeed but Im not too far from objective, I hope. Anyway

While putting this together, it really hit me how much more talent well have this year as opposed to previous years. Many positions will have only a fraction of the same players that were here last year, and in each case, the talent has been increased. For instance, RB will consist of Jones, Barber and Thomas. Last year was Jones, George, and Lee. No comparison.
Something else hit me while I was doing this too: Many of the returning players will be improved, either from just maturing and learning, or from improved situations theyll be put in. Some that come immediately to mind are:
*Roy Williams being played near the line of scrimmage.
*Julius Jones having experience, a better offensive line and more rest.
*Quincy Morgan learning our system for a year.
*Patrick Crayton and Terrance Copper another year of experience.
*Torrin Tucker (if he starts) having Rivera and Campbell being beside him.
*Larry Allen being in better shape and buying into Parcells ways.
*Al Johnson another year removed from knee surgery and more experience.
*Jason Witten and Sean Ryan another year of experience.
*Greg Ellis and LaRoi Glover much more rest and better help on the DL.
*Kalen Thornton used more to his strengths and more experience.
*Ryan Fowler, Bradie James, Keith ONeil, and Scott Shanle another year of experience.
*Terence Newman, Roy Williams and Keith Davis having an improved pass rush.
Well also be getting quite a few players back from injury. Dan Campbell and Terry Glenn being the ones who will significantly help (*):
Dan Campbell*
Stephen Peterman
Terry Glenn*
Bruce Thornton
Erik Bickerstaff
Pete Hunter
I also noticed the sheer number of players that will be new to the team. The numbers are really amazing if you look at it on paper. Many of those will be starters or heavily counted on. Even the ones that arent going to be counted on, very well could surprise and at the least should provide good depth. I put an asterisk (*) by the players who should be starters or get significant playing time.
Jason Ferguson*
Anthony Henry*
Drew Bledsoe*
Marco Rivera*
Aaron Glenn*
Anthony Thomas*
Demarcus Ware*
Marcus Spears*
Kevin Burnett*
Marion Barber III*
Chris Canty
Justin Beriault
Rob Petitti
Jay Ratliff
Twenty players that werent playing last year that will be this year. Thats twelve players who will start or play a lot. Twelve players added to the team who should be real upgrades from what we had last year. Looking at backups, the other eight guys are probably better than the backups we had last year. Ill put an asterisk (*) by the upgrades that should be very significant:
Campbell > Ryan*
T. Glenn > Morgan*
Ferguson > Leo Carson*
Henry > Frazier*
Bledsoe > Testeverde*
Rivera > Gurode*
A. Glenn > Nathan Jones (nickel back)*
A. Thomas > Rashard Lee
Ware > Marcellus Wiley or Dexter Coakley*
Spears > Marcellus Wiley*
Burnett > Al Singleton
Barber > Eddie George*
Canty > Kenyon Coleman
Beriault > Tony Dixon
Petitti > Vollers
Ratliff > Daleroy Stewart
Thats ten big upgrades. In a sport where only 11 men can be on the field at the same time, that should mean a lot of improvement. A lot.
Now, on to the roster. Remember when I said I had trouble figuring out who to cut and who to keep? Well, I couldnt completely decide.
What Ive done below is write each position with the players likely to be considered to be kept. I have most of the players listed, but for the sake of keeping it uncluttered, I eliminated some of the longer, long-shots (DL Marlon Tickles for instance). In all, I have 70 players listed, so 17 players must go. Who would you guys cut?
It was very hard for me and I change my mind nearly every time I look at the roster. I put my cuts in red when I was finally able to decide. I also listed who I thought might go on the practice squad.
I also think theres a chance Canty goes on IR and someone else keeps a roster spot. I didnt do it that way though.
Also, one of the things that has intrigued me this year is how many quality people and hard workers that Parcells has managed to get on the team. So, I put a C beside the players who are specifically known to be high character, hard working guys. Thats not to say the ones without the C arent hard workers or theyre bad guys
its just that I havent specifically heard or read that they are hard working, high character players.
Aditionally, I put an R by the rookies, a 2 by the second year guys, and a 3 by the third year players in order to give an indication of how many young guys we have on the team.
I put the starters in bold. Notice that I put four defensive linemen as starters and put four linebackers as starters. I did that because we are going to spend plenty of time playing both the 3-4 and the 4-3 scheme and so all of those players will be starters in one or the other scheme. I also bolded Aaron Glenn because hes going to spend a lot of time on the field. Well be in the nickel a good portion of the time.
Heres the front-runners for a roster spot:

Seventy players. Fifty-two of which I have specifically read or heard that they are hard working, high character, coachable players. Thats amazing and couldnt do anything except help team chemistry and lower on the field mistakes. When you figure that many of the ones without Cs probably wont make it past the final cuts, you might as well say that the entire team is filled with hard workers (45 of my final 53 had "C's"). Is filled with players who will fight till the last second and will do anything to win.

Also note that of those 70, 42 players are either rookies or in their second or third season, so we appear to have a pretty good young core of players coming up.

Are you seriously suggesting Mr. Tickles doesn't make this squad?
Actually, your roster looks reasonable to me. It would be a shame if Bruce Thorton didn't work out. I think he still has a chance and he will be given every chance to do so.

Pretty good job! Injuries will change a couple of cuts to keepers. Much like the draft we just don't know what direction BP wants to go so there are sure to be at least a couple of surprises.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

Pretty good analysis Asthma.
I think the one thing that bothers me the most about your post is that our young corners we drafted last year are gonna be released instead of being groomed. Granted they were 7th round picks or whatever and expectations were low to begin with, but I think they could've at least been stashed on the practice squad. Unfortunately, they all played too much except for Thornton to be eligible.
Other than that, I think you gave a pretty good analysis on who may or may not be on the roster.
Thank you to all donated to the Jason Witten Camp drive!

Forgive me, but I had to change the font to something easier on my eyes.

I cut and pasted this to a different area. Just wanted to say this in particular was an excellent analysis. High character team in the making.

I'd be shocked to keep 5 OTs even when one of them can play OG as well. Vollers would be gone IMO.

8 seems like a lot to keep even with a 3-4. Thornton, Shanle, Singleton, and Fowler are on the hot seat. I think Goolsby will make the team. Goodbye Shanle and Fowler.

I was in a hurry earlier trying to get info on the Wright tito fight so I didn't get to read all of your post. Man you must have put a lot of time into it. Good Job as I mentioned in my first post the only players I would change is we keep Tyson Thompson and get rid of one of the TE's and maybe keep Goolsby and lose fowler but thats just my take again good job.

I think he stays only because he is a good longsnapper and all he does is catch touchdowns. What, was it 3 years ago when we were having all the problems with longsnapper that prompted us to bring in Robinson?

AF really good work. That is significant roster upgrade and changeover. We are starting to get real depth at many positions.
What is amazing is that we can still add players in F/A so this may change for the better again.

Thanks guys. When great posters like you guys think one of my posts is good... that means a lot.
That was a hard task. Everyone who thinks I was off on a few things is probably right... but what is a guy supposed to do? There were just too many good Players.
For every Noll I kept, there had to be a Goolsby or an Ogbogu cut.
WG, I had the same worries in cutting Nate Jones and Jaques Reeves... they showed some promise. But if we keep them... who do we cut? Like Hos suggested, a couple of LB's could go. Shanle and Fowler, I think Hos said.
Problem is, I think Parcells likes both of those guys. He likes Keith O'Neil too, but I think he might like him less than Fowler and Shanle. So my guess would be that O'Neil would go, even though I like him and I think he's worth keeping on the roster.
Fowler showed a lot of promise on special teams, so I think that'd keep him around... but really all three LB's have special teams potential, so who knows. I mean every year I form a roster after the draft and see who looks like they'll stay and who'll go. But this year was probably the toughest call that I've seen.
Five tackles is a lot, I know, and I actually had it down to four but I think Parcells really likes Vollers. Petitti would get swiped off of the practice squad, so I don't see him going there. However, 5 OT's is just too many, I agree, plus he wouldn't do too much on special teams I don't think, so keeping either J. Reeves or N. Jones in his place might very well be the direction we go. I still hate to see Vollers go. I think he might end up a keeper, like Tuinei... a late bloomer. I went back and forth a while on Vollers.
jksmith, no I didn't know Deronde is a LB... I thought he was a DT. I still don't see him making the team though. Thanks for setting me straight. Do you really think Tyson Thompson will make the squad? Is he that good?
Bottom line is, like I said, there's going to be some good players let go from Dallas this year, and some hard decisions will have to be made. It all means one thing though... Lot's more talent in big D, and with a coach like Parcells, that's a bad thing for the rest of the NFL.
*Note: Sorry about the font Hos. I typed it in Microsoft Word and then copied and pasted it over here... when I did, it came out like that. I suppose I could've changed it, but I didn't. I will next time.

Thanks Juke. So how many LB's would you keep? Would you let N. Jones and J. Reeves go? Do you think Tyson Thompson will make the team? Darrian Barnes?
