Yea really wish we had this guy instead of ROY....

ASHBURN, Va. -- Safety Sean Taylor was the only unexcused absence when the Washington Redskins began practicing Tuesday.

"We have had no contact with him," coach Joe Gibbs said.

Taylor has stayed away from the team's offseason program because he wants a new contract. He signed a seven-year, $18 million deal as the No. 5 overall draft pick last year.

"I think that the day you sign a contract you have to honor that contract," Gibbs said. "That is part of the deal."

The Redskins began a series of "organized team activities" -- practices without pads -- that will lead to a minicamp in mid-June. Attendance is technically voluntary, but Gibbs has made it clear he expects every player to attend if possible.

Among those excused were linebacker LaVar Arrington, who traveled to Alabama on Monday to see a doctor for a checkup on his right knee. Arrington had surgery on the knee last month, and the team is optimistic he will be back on the field for training camp.

"The initial report that we got back is that he felt real good," Gibbs said. "We are just going slow with him."

Also absent was linebacker Mike Barrow, rehabilitating his injured knee with a doctor in Arizona. Punter Tom Tupa was excused for personal reasons. Defensive lineman Brandon Noble, battling complications associated with recent knee surgery, was at Redskins Park but did not take part in the practice.

Receiver Rod Gardner, who has requested a trade, also was not at the facility and is not expected to attend any of the workouts.

Meanwhile, the Redskins waived undrafted rookie tight end David Kashetta to make room on the roster for newly signed linebacker Warrick Holdman.

The Redskins announced last week they were getting the 6-foot-1, 235-pound Holdman, but his signing was not made official until Tuesday.

overhyped, overpaid.....

honestly, Taylor signed this deal 1 year ago, and he wasn't even that great in season 1. What's he complaining about. One thing that does bother me though, in the world of professional football, owners are quite hypocritical for calling out a player who doesn't honor their contract, especially when everyone knows that most contracts are backloaded and bogus to begin with.

Players wouldnt ***** if they knew their contracts were guaranteed and they would pick up all the money, but it's not like that, but it's not going to change, because this fromat makes the NFL what is today. The biggest professional sport in America, as well as also having the best balance of power between the teams. No team has an advantage in terms of money, like in Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey, when it was around. Every team has the same cap number, and most teams are close to the limit. The only advantage gained in the NFL comes from football smarts, cap management and other things, which can be credited to coaches and the front offices.

Per the CBA, he is not allowed to re-negoiate a rookie contract for 1 year. Since he signed last August, he has to wait until then to start any negoiations. Of course, camp will have already started by then. So will he be a hold out ?

Yeah I don't think it really works that way in real life. Though they can't "sign" a contract until then teams routinely negotiate with players before such deadlines. Just look at the rash of FAs signed within hours of being allowed to talk to potential suitors. I'm sure they had the details worked out long before they could officially negotiate.

Never the less, Taylor is an idiot. Should have at least made a pro bowl before the contract talk.

Most skins fans says it's no big deal because it's "involuntary" camp. Yeah right there's no such thing of that when Jimmy was here and with Parcells. Team chemistry is so important that organization doesn't have a clue.

I don't know. I think there really isn't much to this really. Everybody knew that he signed a really bad deal. The guys drafted after him got more money than he did. I think that anybody that thinks Taylor didn't have a very good rookie season didn't watch him play that much. It is very hard for rookies to make the pro-bowl unless they are major hyped or put up insane numbers. Neither of which really fit his situation.

The only part of all of this that I'm paying attention to is Portis saying that Taylor was burnt out on the game and needed a break. That isn't the type of things you want to hear about your high draft pick. They say he's working out in Miami, but nobody knows for sure how hard he's working out.

I watched him play and I really didn't think his season was all that great. And I also noticed that it took him quite a while to break into the starting line-up, which was odd considering who he was competing against.

He seems to have all the physical skills but might not be intelligent enough to make the next step. Time will tell I guess. But he was certainly no rookie of the year.
