“He might be the best safety in football right now. As far as range, as far as being able to come down and stop the football on the run and as far as coming up with plays. He had to be a receiver or a running back in high school because there is no way for a guy who has played defense all his life to have hands like he has. He poses a double threat. He is very tough against the run. He’s a complete safety. I’ve played against guys that are great against the run and not so good against the pass. I’ve played with guys that are great against the pass and not so good against the run. He’s probably most the complete safety that I saw in my 14 years in the league.”

You don't put up the numbers he has over three years (5 ints 2002, 7 2003, 9 2004) and be a product of good players around you. It helps, but he has talent.
I guess Ray Lewis is only good because he has 9 players around him that are terrific.

Consider for a moment how he's able to get nine INT's. There's four defensive lineman that hurry the QB into a bad pass. There's three more linebackers that neutralize his interior targets (TE, FB, HB) and then there are the three other DB's that suppress the WR's. Ten other players doing their job and that makes Reed's job easier. So, he can get those INT's when he's able to capitalize on his teammates shut down abilities.
That is not indicative of Reed's talent, but those of who is around him.
Point, me.

FYI, the Ravens have been playing in a 3-4 defense, not a 4-3.

Consider that he was the fourth leading tackler on that team (more than any lineman, and being fourth is no easy feat when you are a FS, the LAST LINE OF DEFENSE).
Consider that of all those 'shut down' DBs, the other three, he had 9, while the next 2 only had 3. Noone else had more than 1. Not too shutdown. Good, but he carried the bulk of that.
Consider further that he didn't fluke through one season of being this good - he has done so every year he has been here.
He is one of the reasons taht defense is the way it is, not a byproduct of everyone else.

You get the idea though, don't you?
Oh... and on a side note...
Tackles will be inflated when players mess up. A linebacker will always have more tackles than a DE because he'll get tied up more often.
A safety will challenge a LB for a tackles title because the LB's fail and safeties tend to usually pick up the slack.
So, Ed Reed having a crapload of tackles doesn't mean much here.
And that Ravens defense is so good because of that front seven. When they're clicking hardcore... they won a Super Bowl. They're still a top tier defensive unit because the defensive box has been improving. That makes Reed's job easier. He'll see his fair share of tackles because he plays in a division that's pass heavy. He'd really see a jump in stats if he played the Colts twice a year...
So... is Ed Reed a force? Yes, he is. That's not in dispute. What is in dispute is if he's good because of the unit he plays with.
Joey Harrington is similiar to Ed Reed here. Harrington hasn't had much of an offense so his output will seemingly suffer. Now that he has three WR weapons (assuming they all stay healthy) and Kevin Jones, he has a real chance to be an elite QB.
Don't be blind to think it's just Reed himself and not the people around him.

Soooo....Reed's got numbers because other players screwed up. So much for his success being the product of great play by everyone else....

I never said that Reed himself was the only good player, but that Reed's success is because he is a good player on a good defense.
You're the one who said "It's really sad that some people think Ed Reed is actually good." Now you are saying he is a force. Which is it? I say he is a force surrounded by other forces, thus making that entire defense a force.

FS isnt critical to a team, or a defenses success

Thought to ponder: a ball-hawking (and physical, when necessary) FS could turn a potentially good secondary (like ours) into a dominant one. That's the difference a FS could make.
Merton Hanks, former DB with the 49ers, went from being a virtual unknown CB to being a probowl FS, thanks in part to the 1-year services of Mr. Deion "Prime Time" Sanders.

My question is, if we have the cap room, and there are options available after June 1st that would upgrade the position, why WOULDN'T the Cowboys go get one?? What are you saving that money for?? The only other 2 positions that might benefit most from an upgrade are at WR and ROT, but the Cowboys have MUCH better options on the roster for those 2 positions than they do FS...
[View Full Quote]Bluntly, Keith Davis and/or Lynn Scott would be considerably below-average free safeties by NFL standards... now, the Cowboys might be able to mask their deficiencies at FS if they went with either one of them, but they would do so to the detriment of other aspects of the defense... to me, it makes more sense to do what you can to find a bonafide free safety, if one is out there to be had...

This has to be one of the most sensible posts I've read on this board on the subject of FS since the FA signing period began!

Ed Reed himself encompasses himself. Refer to my post about putting him on a team that sucks... Statistically, he's rather dominant but I'd still rather see him on the Giants or someteam who has a weak secondary to establish himself as an elite safety.

Ed Reed is the best FS in the game right now by a wide margin. The team he is on helps, but it wouldn't matter. No other FS in the league can disrupt an offense in the same ways he can.
People are talking about putting him on another team. Put another FS on that defense. Could any other FS in the league win Defensive MVP on that defense?
I doubt it.
He's the best FS in the game right now.

I still think it's going to be Davis. Although, I have been wrong...from time to time.

The signs point to Davis right now. Scott may have the experience, but Davis is slowly earning his way up, while Scott is swiftly earning his way back to ST.
