Problem is, the only impact ILB that I see as worth having in the 1st round is Ahmad Brooks of Virginia, and he's currently rated a top 10 1st round pick...

Hopefully we can improve the WR corp next year or at least start to. But it might have to wait till 2007 when there is more talent in that draft to choose from.

OTOH, there are a few of them who might be worth a look in the 2nd-- Leon Williams and Roger McIntosh of Miami, or Spencer Havner of UCLA... the Longhorns' Aaron Harris might be worth a 3rd round pick...

Another big 10 linebacker that should be there late in round 1 is Pierre Woods out of Michigan. He's a load at 6-5 and 245 lbs. and has experience at DE in addition to OLB.

On the value boards I've seen so far, Woods is rated a 4th or 5th round pick...

Another candidate that i like at the FS spot, probably more than Salley is Jimmy Williams at VT. He started every game in 2003 as a sophomore at free safety. In 2004 he made the move over to corner where he also excelled with 5 picks and 14 pass breakups so he has the necessary ball skills. Also has nice size at 6-2 210. Not sure he'll be around late teens early 20's but it sure would be nice.
|
Yup, there's the issue-- Williams might well go in the first half of round one... but what do you think of Jason Allen, from Tennessee?? He and Huff are 2-3 behind Williams at FS, on my board...

Hell no it isn't too early for a Mock draft thread. Espcially since we're in the dog days of May.
My #1 man crush of 2006 is already focused on Mathis Kiwanuka, the big DE from Boston College. The thing is, I know we won't be looking DE unless everyone stinks out loud. I don't see that happening.
Staying with the D Line I like the idea of Haloti Ngata of Oregon, Rod Wright of Texas, or Orien Harris of Miami.
Ahmed Brooks of Virginia at MLB would make me happy. Can't see us going OLB.
At CB I am watching Jimmy Williams of Va Tech. I also like William Blackmon of Boston College.
Safety is Darnell Bing of USC.
O-line is a strong possibility. I like Andrew Whitworth of LSU, Eric Winston of Miami, Marcus McNeil of Auburn, and D'Brisckashaw (great name) Ferguson of Virginia.
I don't see us going RB or QB.
WR is where I think we'll focus. Your kid Nance is a stud. Love to get him. I also like Todd Watkins from BYU.

Right now, I am hoping someone steps up at RT. I would say the most pressing needs next year will be DT(NT), LB and WR. Maybe another guard.

I'd like to see us take a center too. I just don't trust that Gurode/Walter winner as a back up to Johnson.

Watkins is the fastest prospect I've seen so far at WR, and has decent size... he's on my preliminary draft board as a 2nd round candidate...
I was doing a little more reading on Nance earlier today, and it turns out he's listed as having run a 4.35 40 in his online bio on Miami's official website... of course, that was pre-injury, and they're still listing him at 210 pounds, while he's apparently added about 15 pounds... so for now, I'll stick with the more-conservative 4.45 second 40 time... that's still plenty fast for a guy that big...

Consider that FS is not one of the glamor positions, and that Huff will be one of 3 highly regarded players at that position, along with Jason Allen of Tennessee, and the real marquee name, Jimmy Williams of Virginia Tech... it's rather likely, I think, that one of those 3 will wind up falling outside the top 50... and since I've already said that most folks rate Williams number 1, the question then becomes who goes first, Huff or Allen?? To me, that's six of one, a half dozen of the other... if Huff isn't on the board in the 2nd, then Allen will be...
And on the coupla websites I've seen that speculate about a value board so far, Huff is indeed graded as a 2nd round pick... of course, a good senior season could change all that... I'm a Horns fan, and I like the guy, but if the draft were held tomorrow, yeah, I think the Boys might have a shot at drafting him in the 2nd round...

I have Watkins as a 2nd rounder as well. You are right about his quicks.

But this is Bear you're talking about. If Bear couldn't find at least one outsized candidate, he's not happy.
I promise, when UTEP gets a 400 pound sumo wrestler playing NT, Bear will connive a way to have the Cowboys take him somewhere in his mock drafts.
David.

Only if he's also Samoan...
You're absolutely right, at this early stage in the season, I'm lookin' for big, and I'm lookin' for fast... as the season wears on, I'll find out that some of these huge prospects who have caught my eye run 5.8 40s, and they'll be weeded off the list... meanwhile, other players I haven't heard about yet, or whose raw numbers didn't impress me all that much, will find their way onto the chart...
And yeah, I always pay particular attention to players who attended the following schools:
Texas
Virginia
UTEP
Tennessee
