Default Another Take on Hunters willingness to Play FS and Jones got bigger but lost weight

COWBOYS NOTES

Hunter says he's ready to contribute

By Mac Engel and Charean Williams

Star-Telegram Staff Writers

IRVING - Pete Hunter said it was all a big misunderstanding: He isn't demanding a trade, and he will play wherever the Cowboys want him to play.

Hunter, a fifth-round draft pick in 2002, started the first three games last season at right cornerback before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. After the Cowboys signed veteran cornerback Anthony Henry in free agency, Hunter denounced a possible move to safety, and his agent sought a trade.

But Hunter said Saturday he "definitely wants to be here" and has no problem with a move to safety, if that's what the Cowboys want. Coach Bill Parcells, however, has said he has no plans to move Hunter to safety.

"A lot of that stuff was blown up, guys saying this and saying that," said Hunter, who signed a one-year tender for $656,000. "I never said I wouldn't play safety. I said I wanted to play corner. If they need me at safety, I'll play that. Wherever, man. I'm so far past that. I'm just happy to be out here."

Hunter said he is fully recovered from knee surgery.

Rogers feels right

Jacob Rogers is feeling more comfortable at right tackle, a position he hadn't played since his first year at Southern California when he was a backup at both left and right tackles. A Cowboys second-round draft pick in 2004, Rogers was expected to compete for the starting right tackle job. But he never got on the field.

"It was really tough," he said. "Obviously, you always want to play. It just makes you want to work harder during the off-season."

Rogers, a three-year starter at left tackle for Southern Cal, injured his left shoulder during last year's rookie mini-camp, hindering his development as a right tackle. He still is rehabbing from off-season surgery on his shoulder, keeping him sidelined during the team's minicamp.

"I think I can get comfortable on the right," Rogers said. "It's just a matter of where they want me to play. I'll just go out there and work hard and try to get out on the field. ... We'll see where they have me lined up come the end of July."

Campbell takes first step

Tight end Dan Campbell is taking his first significant steps after missing the final 13 games of the 2004 season because of torn ligaments in his right foot. Campbell said everything in his foot is back to normal, but not yet back to football normal.

"[Saturday and Sunday] of this minicamp will tell me a lot about [how the foot is doing] because it's two-a-days," Campbell said. "You obviously put more stress on it during these times than during the season. If I get through this part, I'll know I'll be back OK going into training camp. If I make it through training camp, I'll be fine for the season."

Campbell appeared in two games last season, catching two passes for 16 yards.

Briefly

• Cornerback Terence Newman has been returning punts during minicamp. He has two returns for 13 yards in two seasons. "I'm just another body," he said. "I probably won't get a snap back there."

• La'Roi Glover, who has made five consecutive Pro Bowls at tackle in the 4-3 defense, is learning both end and nose tackle in the 3-4.

• Running back Julius Jones weighs only 212 pounds, down from the 217 he was listed in last year's media guide, but he looks bigger. "I've put on some mass," he said. "... Last year I was kind of shriveled up after I broke my shoulder. I got back in the weight room and put on some bulk. I guess it's showing, huh?"

Glover playing some 3-4 End - Interesting. Always felt he could do that some.

Of course Rogers feels right. Bring in a hot shot rookie with tons of potential and looks like he could be the real deal would make anyone feel right. Rogers has heard all the doubters since he got hurt. Maybe he just now is figuring out he better get on the field before someone calls him a bust.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

Man I like that. More fast twitch muscle fibers means more explosion. It's gonna be a fun year in Big D.

Julius' upper body is ridiculous. I think one reason it's being said he's "gained" weight is because a lot of places listed him last year at 205 and not 217 (along with the fact he lost weight after the injury).

OK someone explain this to me. How do you get more muscle mass and lose weight? Doesn't muscle weigh more than fat?

...put any value onthe media guide's numbers. Heights and weights have a tendency to stray on these documents. Common tactic in all sports.

You are right though. The volume of one pound of fat is signifcantly greater than it's counter part in muscle. Therefore, one cubic inch of muscle weighs more than one cubic inch of fat.

It's also more pleasant looking on the body - the muscle that is.

You gain say, 4 pounds of muscle and lose say, 10 punds of fat. You've gained 4 pounds of muscle, but had a net loss of 6 pounds.

Also the 217 was at the start of last season prior to the injury, he was at 205 at the end of the season I think.

he has actually put on weight if I have read the stats correctly.

One gram of fat weighs one gram the exact weight one gram of muscle weighs.

The density of muscle is higher and the volume lower than that of an equal amount of weight of fat.

Also fat in men tends to be more centrally located than women. So even though excess fat is stored all over the body more of it is central. Thats why we have beer bellies. Lots of subcutaneous abdominal fat as well as fat stored in the omentum and mesentary both being intraabdominal.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

so let me see if i've got this right - we have an improved RB with better depth behind him, playing behind an improved OL with better depth behind them - and we've upgraded the QB position too? this should be a piece of cake...

glover thankfully has the athleticism to play anywhere he wants along the line, pretty much. and the intelligence and desire to learn quickly. him i don't worry about... but its funny (in a sad way) that some here actually favored trading him! heaven forbid!

This whole weight thing with JJ I think started out when he was a soph and was listed at 205 at ND. Then he had that year suspension due to bad grades and they never bothered to update the guide, despite all the talk at ND during his senior year about how he had gained weight and was much heavier and stronger. ESPN, SI, none of them seem to really care about checking anything out so they just keep on using the old numbers from ND.
