Out of Nowhere...
It seems as if this Ahmad Merritt kid is turning heads. In my pre-season roster, I have us only keeping 5 wide receivers - Keyshawn, T. Glenn, Q. Morgan, P. Crayton and possibly T. Copper or a FA acquisition. If we keep 6, does anyone think this Merritt kid could be the 6th receiver?

He got mentioned in Chad's latest article as turning heads for an unheralded FA pickup.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

Thanks, I will read that one a bit closer!
PS Is this kid also a return specialist by any chance?

I read it, but I know nothing about him. I am hoping for Harrell to make the team, just because I think he could be a good ST player.
If you REAAALLY want my opinion, I think that Copper got his hype up a bit much last season. I don't think that the injury to his knee is a good thing. His best attribute right now is the fact that he is veeeery fast.
I think he makes the squad, but I was much more impressed with Crayton than Copper. We'll see, I suppose.

I agree, Crayton seemed to me to be a clutch player. He made plays for us on crucial thrid down plays. If Morgan who has bulked up, if he hasnt lost any speed and can also improve his hands that may spell the end for Copper. depending on how many WR we keep.
Key, Glenn, Mogan, Crayton, Copper/????

I was thinking about it, and come to think about it, I think that Copper does have a place - he was pretty good on kick coverage last season. He can tackle. If we keep 5 WRs, that would probably be the group. If we add another, I say Harrell or Crowder. Probably Crowder.

You beat me to it. I was about to say exactly the same thing. I think Crayton makes it as #4 but Copper dropped some passes last year that would have helped us and that I thought he should have caught. Any of the other guys we picked up on the market could step up and push Copper out.

They do seem to be infatuated with this Crowder kid. I haven't seen enough of him to form an opinion. I think the #5 and especially the #6 (if we keep 6) positions are wide open. Crowder is supposed to be a ST demon as well so it could come down to who catches better. Of course one of the other guys could step up and push them both out. It will be interesting to see who comes out of nowhere this year.

Merritt will never make it. Die hard Badger fan here. He did the same at Udub. Nice speed but zero consistancy. I wish him luck but think in the end he winds up on the waiver wire...

Thanks for the heads up...
I have been reading that he's made some nice catches in minicamp and has turned a few heads. Reading your comment, however, makes me wonder if he is in fact nothing more than a tease.
On other WR news, what does Parcells see in Copper? He made some nice catches last year (I'm remembering the Seattle game specifically), but what else has he done? I haven't noticed any blazing speed out of him, but supposedly he has it. I do think that Crayton, if he can remain consistent, will be a very nice addition to this team for several years to come.

Off the subject a bit but regarding former Badgers........Look for Al Johnson to be a ROCK for years to come. This guy has a nasty streak a mile long. Gotta love that in a offensive lineman. Gonna be a probowler sooner than later. Als the type of a guy more liable to smash you in the jaw at the drop of a hat. Known for that on and OFF the field in Madison. Not a troublemaker at all, but WONT take any guff either. Knocked more than a few dudes OUT in his day... :iggles:

When Copper got his chance, he started off well. He just seemed to decline. On the other hand, Crayton (who is a project anyway), started rusty, but then became VERY solid.
As for Crowder, he is one of the fastest players we have right now. That's the infatuation.

if we had drafted a WR this discussion wouldn't be happening, and apparently Bill thinks we have significant talent and speed already - which i agree with. copper is probably the better ST player, but who can forget crayton's catch against the Skins? but Morgan is the one who i really hope steps it up - he has some skills...

I think if we keep 6 WRs who we keep there will depend on who wins the FS job. If Davis wins the FS job then I think we'd end up keeping a coverage specialist like Crowder as the 6th WR (or maybe even only keep 5 WRs with Crowder being the 5th. Copper isn't guaranteed a spot). If Davis doesn't win the FS job then I think the 5th/6th WR will be a return specialist.

I doubt we keep 6 at WR. Merritt might show enough to warrant a practice squad spot. The final 53? Extreme longshot.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.
