Gurode absolutely dominated at Center as a rookie.
They moved him to OG because he had played both positions in college and we had more of a need at OG than at Center where both Lehr and Tyson Walter could fill in. The move was NOT because he stunk at Center, quite the opposite in fact. It was because he had played so well that they thought he could make the switch to OG and they could use Lehr or Walter at Center.
Well, Lehr stunk but they stuck with him anyway until Johnson stepped up. Gurode made too many mental mistakes at OG last year to suit Parcells which is why we went out and got Rivera.
[View Full Quote]Gurode has a very good chance of winning the starting job at Center this year if he can stay motivated. I think a lot of his problems the last 2 years at OG were due to an overall lack of talent along the O-Line. Larry Allen wasn't playing very well for much of that time and with Lehr and whoever we had at RT playing next to him, he couldn't have been too motivated.
Johnson made his share of mistakes last year at Center and, contrary to popular belief, Gurode was not that bad at RG. Yes he made some mistakes and had too many false starts as did Tucker at RT.
Parcells likes Gurode and is giving him a chance to compete for a starting position. Funny, he isn't doing the same for Peterman who was highly touted coming out of college until being injured last year.
Not saying that Gurode will win the starting Center job but he will give Johnson a run for it and has a good chance of winning it.

He's a long shot at best to beat out Al J.
