Do the recent incidents with Winslow and Taylor
taint Miami's football program so as in the Draft NFL teams will think twice about spending a Round 1 pick on a player from that school?
It seems to me that since the days of M. Irvin where Miami players were perhaps sterotyped as "cocky" things have regressed.
I'd guess NFL teams would consider each player on his own merits from Miami, but I have to think the background checks are going to be even more intense for prospective Round 1 picks.
Opinions?

Let me clarify that I'm not trying to equate Taylor's actions with Winslow's. Clearly, Taylor's are much worse.
Just that the decisions these guys are making are questionable at best.

i dont care where there from, every scout department needs to do a backround check on the players they target.

I really think that the University of Miami needs to put some kind of program in place to take the hood out of the players.
These guys are just incapable of living in the NFL society the way they are coming out of the U.
There are some exceptions but it just seems that the best trun into thugs and jerks. That's not to say that other colleges don't have their share of these guys but Miami just seems to be a breeding ground for it.

I don't think Miami has anything to do w/turning some of these guys INTO thugs and jerks or whatever. Their problem is that they've accepted these guys who are ALREADY thugs and jerks.
Can't indict a university for the behavior of a few after they've left them. But you can indict the football program for accepting these guys and not doing whatever possible to try and encourage those w/questionable character to be better human beings and lose some of that thug mentality.

Miami just has more players in the league so it makes it seem like their players are always in trouble. Everyone hates a winner and it gets no better than The U of Miami.

The recruiting dept. down there needs to rethink the way they operate. Most of the heat from this Taylor incident will come down on the Redskins even though it was the U that should have done something about it before he was drafted.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

Two years ago, Miami recruited the #1 LB and a top ten overall player in Willie Williams. They didn't check his background, and he ended being convicted of since serious crimes last year (can't remember what they were, tho).

Willie Williams was a freshman last year. The U did alot of background work on him and he went in front of the school president to be admitted. All of his crimes were done while he was in HS. I know one of them was actually done during his visit to Florida where he hugged a girl with out her consent. And also let off a fire extinguser at a hotel. Since then Willie has been a great student and citizen at Miami. He suffered a leg injury last year and missed most of the season. Look out for him. He could be the next Ray. Miami did more than a background check with this kid. They took him off the streets and gave him an education. Coach Coker is a class act.

Of course not. You're talking about 2 players. Miami has also put out some guys like Andre Johnson, Willis McGahee, et al who not only play extremely well but are strong in the community.
Every program has idiot players.
Not only that, but it is too early to assume either of these guys are done leaving their mark on the game.

Oh come on, who hasn't set off a fire extinguisher at a hotel?

Wasn't indicting the University for TURNING them into thugs. Just saying they should have a program for taking these kids and molding them into productive people who can cope with the NFL. If there is an indictment of the U. it is that they seem to fail at doing this on a fairly regular basis.
As for accepting these guys, the bottom line is if they can play football they want them. Simple as that. But I agree that they should be more proactive in finding those kids who are less likely to need this kind of intervention.

Whatever.....Coker picked up WW for his official visit in a white Escalade. They knew what they were dealing with. If they say they did a background check on him, apparently, it didn't matter at all with what they found.
And he didn't just "hug" a girl w/o her consent and just set off a fire extinguisher. He's been arrested 12 times. Once for stealing over $3000 in stereo equipment.

Miami officials said last week they were unaware Williams had been arrested 10 times from 1999 through 2002, mostly for burglary and theft-related charges, an admission that Dee said showed the background-checking process was "insufficient."
