Point value chart and the move to the 2nd
Lets evaluate the trade based on the draft point value chart.
http://www.steelers.com/news/index.cfm?cont_id=240904
What we started off with:
22nd pick = 850 pts.
What we ended up with:
43rd pick = 480 pts.
144th pick = 37 pts.
Next years first for average team = 600 pts.
Total = 1117 pts.
In other words we increased our total point value this year by 31%. For those of you who say it was a bad draft, look at the numbers. Get off of KJ and SJ's jocks. They're as unproven as JJ right now. In terms of value, we got the better part of the deal.

I said this before in another thread but I'll say it again, you can't calculate it that way because the 1st rounder next year is in 2005. If you want to get technical, it's worth an average 2nd rounder this year. It does us no good for the coming season.
So yes, for those of us who look long term, we got a great deal. Me, I'm looking forward to next year and the trade does us no good for 2004. If you consider 2004 only (one year at a time), we traded a sure-fire 240 lb bruiser for a 210 pound running back who has had problems being coached and has termed by many scouts as a WCO type of back.

Look at the link. An average first rounder next year is worth 600 pts this year.

There are those who will always want the sexy pick. GP, your post summarizes and quantifies it nicely. Some will not want to face reality. (No pun intended, R)

Don't forget
That 2 first round picks means either 2 good players or the ability to move into the top ten for a great one.
We are more than a RB away from the Super Bowl right now, but we have the rest of the draft, June cuts, another offseason with cap room, so this trade could give us that IMPACT player that may put us over the top.

I think this pretty much personifies the philosopy this team is taking.
Its about building a franchise that can compete for years to come.
We are alot farther than just a RB from being serious competitors. We will likely be developiing Henson this season and if JJ doesnt pan out then we can always look at Cadillac Williams next draft.
It was tought to stomach trading out of that 22nd pick with our choice of runningbacks there for the taking but this has the potential to be a blockbuster deal for us if Buffalo struggles and Jones proves his worth.

I was at work, and when I saw that we traded out of the 1st round spot, and only saw the 2nd and the 5th that we got this year, I was pertty POed, but when I saw that we got a #1 next year also, I was exstatic.
You can NOT put a point value on what 2 1st round DP's can do for a team. Next year, we have the ability to package the 2 #1's and move up to get a SUPERSTAR. Or we can sit back where we are.
Yes, most likely Steven Jackson would have been a better RB than Julious Jones, but with or without Jackson this is still a playoff caliber team. And with or without Jackson this is NOT a true Super Bowl Caliber team. If this team was a Steven Jackson away from winning the SB, then yes it would have been a bad trade. But, that is not the case. When you are not one player away from a SB, and you get a chance to get a SECOND FIRST rounder next year, you MUST take it.

Excellent point. We needed to have someone to replace LA. With that in mind I do believe that we will trade LA. We also needed more picks this year and next year. With us giving up a third for Henson, we are now in a good position to get great value in next year's draft. With a strong FA period next off season, we should be in a good position to go deeper in the playoffs.

Add to that the fact that the Bills are a BELOW average team. They do not have the tools to challenge their AFC East competition. I can't see them finishing above .500. Take it from a man named for a prophet of doom. I rate the Bills' 1st at 700+.

Let's see how it goes. The bruiser got picked by the Rams. Ever notice how they always seem to be picking running backs high (Candidate etc). Looking for the next Marshall. I didn't Want Jackson or Kevin Jones. At the end of season we'll know who made the better decison. Trading down works if you have a good judge of talent like Bill Parcells. If we still had Campo I would no be happy at all due to no confidence in who we picked.
