Skins Sign Taylor
So much for Taylor holding out. I still think this guy will be trouble, though.

Redskins Sign Taylor to 7-Yr., $18M Deal

ASHBURN, Va. - The Washington Redskins (news) agreed to a seven-year, $18 million deal with first-round draft pick Sean Taylor, The Associated Press has learned.
After late night negotiations, Taylor was on a flight to Washington on Tuesday morning to sign his contract, according to agent Jeff Moorad.
"We agreed to terms as the clock struck midnight," Moorad said.
A Redskins official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the agreement and said the team would probably hold a news conference later Tuesday.
[View Full Quote]The amount of the contract was confirmed by a party involved in the negotiations, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been signed. The source said Taylor will receive a $7.2 million signing bonus, and that the total bonus money in the deal — including option and roster bonuses — exceeds $13 million.
The source also said the contract has escalators that can make the deal worth up to $40 million over six years, while the seventh year can be voided. The escalators are based on three areas — playing time, on-field performance and Pro Bowl or All-Pro selections.
Taylor, the No. 5 overall pick, is expected to be Washington's opening day starter at free safety.
Taylor will join the team during its three-day "passing camp," which began Monday. The first standard training camp practices — in full pads with mandatory attendance for all players under contract — begins Saturday.
The deal ends a rather rocky spring and summer for the Miami standout, who was selected higher in the draft than any safety in 13 years.
Taylor fired his agent days after the draft. He was fined $25,000 by the NFL for leaving the league's rookie symposium in June. He was the victim of a prank gone wrong at a spring minicamp, when his vision was impaired by a pile of shaving gel squirted into his face by linebacker LaVar Arrington. Taylor had to miss practice the next day.
Taylor didn't decide on an agent until last week, but both sides worked through the circumstances to get the deal done. Redskins vice president for football operation Vinny Cerrato flew to California for two days of talks last week, and Moorad made a surprise return trip to Redskins Park on Monday, showing up unannounced at the front door.
"We returned the favor and are very glad that we came East and were able to conclude this in a timely fashion," Moorad said.

That is what I was thinking.
7 year deal with it being possibly being voided after 6.
Plus with incentives reached the deal could reach $40 mill.

7 year deals aren't that unusual these days...
http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/DAL/5553109
An excerpt:
SAN ANTONIO (July 26, 2002) -- The Dallas Cowboys signed No. 1 pick Roy Williams and the rest of their top-four selections, and will have all nine of their drafted rookies on the field for their first practice.
Williams, the All-American safety from Oklahoma who is expected to be a starter, signed a seven-year contract. He was the No. 8 pick overall in the 2002 NFL Draft.
The Cowboys also signed their second-round picks -- center/offensive guard Andre Gurode and receiver Antonio Bryant -- and third-round pick, cornerback Derek Ross, to seven-year deals.

Brings up an interesting point about our guys, they all had voidable contracts as well, wonder if any of them have the chance to void them at the end of this season. anyone?

I rembember that had something to do with Hutch having to go into the rookie pool. So we had to give longer contracts to our draft picks.

barring injury, Taylor will be a stud. Even the Redskins couldn't screw up a choice between Taylor or Winslow. Both guys if they keep their heads on straight are big time players.

You are correct.
We did it because of that reason...if it were not for that reason chances are the contracts would have been different.

I thought so also. Seems like he should of gotten more.
BUT........I guess if he gets the big money, it means he's been kicking *** and became and all-pro.
After our recent history, its hard to get too excited this time of year. I just want to see some progress this year.

I have voted for Lavar to go to the pro bowl every year, even though I think he makes WAY to many mistakes to be a pro bowl player. Just trying to do my part to see that LA makes that incentive money.
Even if Taylor doesn't start this year, he will be getting my pro bowl vote. Those are some big numbers when you look at the incentives.
