Default James may be interested

But Colts running back not
a free agent until after this season

Colts running back Edgerrin James reportedly has express interest in playing for the Dolphins in the wake of Ricky Williams' sudden retirement.

In the wake of star running back Ricky Williams' surprising retirement, Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James has indicated he wouldn't mind playing for the Miami Dolphins, the Miami Herald reported Monday.
James has told numerous people he would like to be traded to the Dolphins after Williams' announcement, the Herald reported. Such a trade is highly unlikely this season, but James will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end.
Returning to South Florida, where James grew up and attended the University of Miami, would be his No. 1 choice, the Herald reported. He has made it known he dislikes living in Indianapolis, preferring Miami's warmer climate.

James appears to be the most appealing option among running backs the Dolphins could replace Williams with at some point, but that point would not be for at least a while because the Colts are Super Bowl contenders, the Herald reported.

Coach Dave Wannstedt said Travis Minor would be the No. 1 running back when the team starts training camp practices Saturday. Wannstedt spoke Sunday with Minor, who has never started in his three years with the Dolphins.
Among the players available now who might fit are unemployed former starters James Stewart and Stacey Mack, the Herald reported. Both are pounding runners who concentrate on going between the tackles.
''They're among the guys we've looked at,'' Dolphins general manager Rick Spielman told the Herald.

Williams' retirement saves the team $3.735 million against the salary cap. That would be more than enough to sign anyone the Dolphins would want right now.

I don't see any way the Colts make that trade. James is a FA next year, so it would be enticing to get something for him, but this is their year to make a SB run. What are the Dolphins going to give to replace him?

I think the Vikings and Bears are the most likely trade partners.

I wonder if they'll be able to keep him next year.

Who know's.....maybe Miami offers a 1st rounder and a few other roll players along with whoever they have penciled in to start right now.

Nah..... that doesn't make sense.

To me it sounds as if James would like to go to Miami but of course it will not be this year but next season James is a FA and should Miami still be in a situations of needing a RB I could see James going to Miami.

If I were the Colts I'd swap Edge for Ogunleye in a heartbeat. Their offense was fine with Dominic Rhodes but they need a pass rush badly.

I was thinking that as well, After all the Colts could still use some more help on the defensive side of the ball but I think if a deal like that was going to happen the Colts would not want to do it this late in the year.

You got that right. The Colts offense is one of the NFL's best. Ogunleye automatically makes their defense a top 10 potentially. Edge is going to leave via Free Agency anyway. Move him now.

I think the Colts would be inclinded to do that but I think after signing Manning to that big contract that they are looking at this year as the year they go all the way and to do that I think they would want all offensive parts in place.

If the Dolphins would be interested, I'd definitely consider Edgerrin for Ogunleye. That article makes it sound like Edgerrin knows he's not coming back. Might as well get something for him.

I live in Indy and Edge doesn't stay here in the offseason, doesn't workout with the other guys in the offseason...

He WAS a great back, but after his Knee surgery he lost a step and some elusivness...
I don't see a trade happening, the cap hit is usually what stops these things...

But next year, I don't see any way he isn't a Dolph...
