Draft Priorities - Dallas Cowboys Forum

From my amateur analysis of this season, it looks like we have holes to fill at these positions: LB, FS, OT, OG, WR, and maybe DL for depth purposes. My problem is that I've seen many people not only on this site, but on other sites, that we're gonna draft an OT in the 1st round. Why?

Let's take a step back and look at the OT situation. Big Flo will be coming back and let's not forget that he was a Pro Bowl player b4 the injury, he's our LT. On the right side, u'll have Tucker(might catch the scissors), Petitti(only gonna get better), and Columbo(finally healthy) fighting for the spot. Drafting a RT in the 1st round is a waste to me. I'd rather bring in a veteran and see what we have in the other guys after a year in the program. No doubt I know that we're gonna have to look for a LT at some point in time soon, but this year isn't the year.

With that said, I'm lookin for these guys when #18 gets on the clock:
LaRon Landry FS LSU
Ahmad Brooks LB Virginia
Santonio Holmes WR Ohio St.
Kai Parham LB Virginia
Bobby Carpenter LB Ohio St.
Michael Huff FS Texas

If we get any of those guys I'm happy.

Marcus McNeill
Ahmad Brooks (if he can keep healthy and have a good combine).
Mike Huff

I am hoping Parham falls to us in the 2nd.
McNeill and Parham and then Pat Watkins in the 3rd is my ideal mock.

How do we get the 3rd? I think we traded our third this year during last years draft. I think that might be the pick we gave the iggles for Canty. If thats the case then its a good move for us.

we gave up our 4th for canty.

Being in VA, I have not heard good things about Brooks' committment/desire (he was reportedly playing at 265lbs for a lot of this year).

I would assume that BP will find out the truth since he knows Al Groh at UVA.

I agree. If we hear Parcells targeting Brooks that means Al Groh has given BP the green light. I have a feeling Groh will be telling Parcells to stay away from Brooks and target Parham in the 2nd. Brooks attitude and injuries are more than enough to make me forget about him.

We need to get another guard- though maybe we could try Tucker there- he played guard in college. Keep Gurode as depth. Draft a 3rd rd tackle to start to develop. Get a decent FA RT for this year or so and see if Pettiti can pick it up. Top FA Center we can get. Keep AL as depth. Get the top FS available. Draft more LB;s and TE's.

I think Huff will be gone at 18 but I want him in Dallas.

I have heard Huff thrown around quite a bit lately, along with Slay down at Texas Tech. I just have to wonder, why in the world would we draft these guys? I understand everyone loves a guy that hits and we are all attracted to the big names, but seriously... Where would you even play these guys?

They will both be strong safeties at the next level. They aren't fast enough to play FS, and they don't have the closing speed of an NFL level FS. Do we really need another Roy Williams, Keith Davis, or Justin Beiriut (sp?)?

It's ok to have your favorite players and want them all to be Cowboys, but I think you have to temper that with our need at the position. Otherwise you'll end up like Charles and his man crush for Heath Miller last year.

Here are my 2006 Needs in order...

ILB
FS
OLB
OG
DT
WR
QB

However because draft value isn't the same for each position I'd draft them in this order...

OG/OLB
FS
ILB
DT
WR
QB

By doing that you get The best Gaurd available, the Second best FS, a top 5 ILB and projects at DT, WR, and QB.

Any draft that gets you 2-3 starters is a success.

Not sure how much you know about Huff, but you are wrong here. Huff has sprinter speed he is very fast and he can cover. He plays SS there though. He could play FS SS or CB for most teams in the league. Just because he can hit some doesnt mean he isnt fast. Huff is the rare safety that can actually do both well.

I'm just going by what I saw on the 3 games I watched of Texas this year. I actually felt #27 had much better closing speed than Huff.

Also, it doesn't matter if you have straight line speed. He needs to be able to adjust quickly to the ball, control his body position, keep his hips low, close quickly on the ball, and have excellent recognition. I think this shows itself in watching plays closely at the college level. Guys like Ed Reed always seemed to be breaking up passes on the reciever in college. That is not something I see from Huff. Huff, however, is impressive when moving foward toward the line. In this way I think he plays more similar to Roy and would be redundant on this team. I think Butler (from the 2005 draft) is a great example of someone with sprinter's speed that just isn't a good fit at FS. I think he had the fastest 40 at S in last years combine, however he had very slow change of dirrection and always took extra steps. Some team will still give Butler a shot at FS because his weaknesses were mostly due to inexperience, but I think Huff is more refined at this point than Butler was.

actually we have their 6th rder this year.we dont have a 4th this year that I know of.
