Default Marcus Mcneil 2nd Round?

Alot of guys on varius boards have us taking or want us to take Marcus Mcneil
with our 18th pick. According to "draft guru" Mel Kiper he's not even in the top 25 prospects. Some web sites have him listed as the 4th tackle behind
Fergerson, Winston and Jonathan Scott. I don't want us reaching for a need position when we could trade down or pick a better player. Even if it is another position.

4th tackle in a very deep tackle class, maybe the best of all time.
He is ranked 2nd here.

Mel Kiper is not the end all be all, and McNeill is widely considered a first rd pick. The only concern I have is his back, but based on talent alone he is a dominant player. He doesnt give up sacks, and he is a dominant run blocker.

The only reason McNeil will slide is because of injury concerns. If he is healthy he is worth a 18th pick. If he isn't we should take another tackle. However, if all the tackles are off the board, Dallas should trade down and pickup another number two. Trade from the 18th and go to the 24-26th pick. We could take Max Jean Guillles or Manny Lawson. I would take Guilles. With the extra 2nd I would take a tackle.

it would be almost too good if we were able to get an LB in round 1 and him in the 2nd...that would be the best possible scenario i think

I like that idea. I don't know if Ahmad Brooks is coming out so I'm thinking he's not. Since he isn't coming out, I would trade down and pick up another 2 or 3.

Their's a ton to talent in the second tier ot talent.

Not only could McNeill fall as a result of health but weight as well. If he checks in overweight, he might fall. But I think by draft time, he is the 2nd OT and is drafted in the top 15.

Last thing the Cowboys need is to draft a injury prone OL.

The thing you have to remember is that a player isn't drafted by those skeptical of his abilities. If enough people are rating him a mid first rounder, the naysayers can go fly a kite, because they won't have an impact on where he is drafted.

Having said that, draft ratings are as prone to fads as anything else, so in evaluating where a player should be drafted, you'll need to watch trends. If you need an example, think about Matt Jones of Arkansas last year.

David.

This is very true.
On the flipside, I remeber Ernest Shazor being the #1 rated S all offseason. He wasn't even drafted!
And remember Hawthorne? Granted he hurt his stock with the drug charges but still.
Trends will happen. Especially following the combine. For this reason, I trust the current rankings having just come off the college season more than I trust anything that develops from here until the draft.

Drafting players in the 1st round w/ a bad back scares me. It brings up memories of David LeFluer.....
