Default BP mentioned in the latest PC that Zimmer ....

has been keeping his nose to the ground because he knows the defense this year isn't as good as last year (or something along those lines, I think). And that there are some things that need to be fixed.

Firstly, ASSUMING Woody returns 100% healthy, why wouldn't our defense be at least as good as last year? I'm not saying that we'll be ranked statistically number 1 in 2004, but with the addition of Wiley and the emergence of Brady I'd figure we should be as good as 2003 "generally speaking". Also, I think Pete Hunter can play as well as Mario Edwards, if not signficantly better (or else I'm sure BP wouldn't have let Mario depart for TB).

Secondly, what is in need of fixing on defense? Is it the blitz defense, or nickel? It seems BP was o.k. with the depth at CB as well as with Dixon thus far. I haven't heard any complaints with respect to our LBs or the DL - other than depth on the DL (i.e., that's partially why Volk is being used there for the time being).

Opinions or Comments?

SOme of the things mentioned in the PC was Wiley still not knowing what he is doing yet, Ellis on the other side of the line.

But (I am reading between the lines) I think we have a problem at CB. He said something along the lines of we are looking at options. Does this mean someone not on the team. I have read some reports that say Powell is getting burned and have heard very little about Hunter.

What I got from Parcells comments is that last year is last year, and does not mean anything going into this year.

He didn't say that the defense wasn't as good as last year, he said that Zimmer was not fooled by the success the defense had last year (paraphrasing). In essense he was saying that Zim is not and will never be satisfied. A perfectionist. There is always room for improvement. He said our safeties are very good at blitzing but we all know that you can't continue to do that. It will catch up with you eventually. He also praised Mario (errr.... Sorrio) and TNew for the jobs they did last year. He was saying that the defense was not going to rest on their laurels.

I thought he was talking about that the defense needed to improve and that he (Zimmer) knew there were things to work on this year. Basically that they had room to improve and he was going to try and improve them this season.

That is what I got out of it as well...however others peoples takes in some areas were mentioned as well...like Wiley still learning and there are still options they are looking into (and like whoever mentioned it I took that as the secondary).

Parcell's style is also to "poormouth" his team and specific guys because he thinks it brings out the best in them... rather than the Dick Vermiel style of gushing over how wonderful and special everyone is.

Parcells is much more likely to say how a guy sucks and then make the guy motivated to prove him wrong.

I think Parcells means HE isn't satisfied with where the D is, nor should he be...

New players are being worked in and we are putting in many new things to be much less predictable then in the past....IE: 3/4 ...4/6...More agressive....

We need more turnovers and more pressure on the offense!

Its early, still alot of improving to do...

Really?

I haven't heard Parcells get into players that obviously need to improve, but I have listened to him dispense plenty of praise, even for largely unproven players.

Parcells has used press conferences to send out positive re-enforcement for players who have been showing progress since joining the team.

Torrin Tucker comes to mind from last year, Parcells glowed when discussing Tucker's ability to eventually become a starter.

And he's been very high on both Daleroy Stewart and Bradie James during the off-season, IMO.

I don't take Parcells as a coach who will air grievences with a player in public, he handles that stuff behind the scenes.

Big Bill never got into what was wrong with LA last year, he simply said that things needed to improve over what they were for this season.

Now, Parcells isn't throwing out praise on every subject ans to every player or anything like that, but he does seem to use the media to let certain players know that their hard work has been noticed and appreciated.

I just listened to the press conference and this is exactly what he said worried him about the defense:

Working Wiley into the system
Ellis at his new position
Leo Carson has a gimpy knee
The depth at linebacker
The depth at safety
Woody's injury
The new corner opposite Newman

He mentioned Woody twice. You can tell he really is worried about that injury. I don't think he trusts Dixon or the other backup safeties at all.

He's not standing Pat, and expects more out of his defense. Secondary has issues...........

2 starters gone and another switching sides makes me a little nervous about the d-line.

All things considered, I'm still more worried about the offense.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.
