My Absolute Final Cowboys Mock...

...before the real deal this weekend. I am changing it up after Jerry's PC today. If you look at my last Mock, I am on the right track in some areas, a bit off in others. This one will involve a trade down in the 1st round.

The value chart I am using has pick #22 worth 780 points, pick #212 is worth 7.6 points, pick 234 is worth 3.4 points. That comes to 791.

I am projecting that the Chargers will want to get ahead of the Chiefs to take the WR of their choice. They send us the 30th pick in round 1 (620 points) and their 3rd round pick #93 (128 points) and pick #129 (43 points). That also comes to 791 points.

That makes this the order and I'll add my picks.

FINAL MOCK

1) #30...Anthony Spencer, DE/OLB, Purdue, 6'3", 261...Spencer becomes a bookend for Ware in the 3-4 and Carpenter moves inside moving Bradie James to primary ILB backup, and Burnett to primary OLB backup. The plan is to use Ellis at LDE as a situational pass rusher. Above all we will pressure the QB with this defense. As much as I would love to have Meachem at WR to prepare for the future and groom him with Tony Romo, I set that aside for what I think will happen.

2) #53...Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina, 6'4", 202...At some point in 2007 our WR of the future will be on the field as the #1 or #2 guy. Even if it is just spelling someone. I would like to see someone groomed to view the work ethic of Owens and Glenn. I like Rice because he produced despite not having a QB.

3) #87...Paul Soliai, DT, Utah, 6' 4", 344...I like this pick. I think he is the NT we need for 7 to 8 years easily. Ferguson is past his prime, (not his usefulness) and this kid will be ready to take over in a year possibly. Maybe even sooner.

3) #93...John Beck, QB, BYU, 6' 2", 215...Jerry Jones still hints that he is thinking QB on day 1 and so am I despite being talked out of it once. I still say this kid is the 3rd best QB in this draft and the best backup to Tony Romo because they play similar.

4) #122...Allen Barbre, OT, Missouri Southern State, 6'4", 300...He's rising up draft boards because he's big and nasty. That's how I like it.

4) #129...Courtney Brown, CB, Cal Poly, 6' 2" 200...His potential is through the roof. He can be the Nickel CB for a year and learn. No matter what, CB in 2008 will probably be my top choice.

5) #159...Anthony Waters, ILB, Clemson, 6'3", 245...Injuries are keeping him form being a day 1 pick. Instead he is a day 2 steal.

6) #195...Joe Newton, TE, Oregon State, 6'7", 257...We only have 2 TEs on the roster, and this guy can not only block, he is a threat in the red zone with his size.

6) #200...Nate Ilaoa, FB, Hawaii, 5'10", 245...in 2006 he had 990 yards rushing with 13 TDs, and 67 receptions for 5 more TDs. He is a bulldozer who can become a weapon at FB.

7) #237...Scott Stephenson, C, Iowa State, 6'3", 297...Can play Guard as well. Versatility equals value at this point.

I want a CB earlier...Eric Wright is a guy I really want and think we could get him in the 3rd...I would heavily consider him in the 2nd as well. I like Spencer alot and would be all over that...he would add a real attitude to the D. Beck is back I see...I knew that last mock you had was a fluke.

I love Soliai in the 3rd round, but I dont know if he's going to still be on the board at #87. If you start to see a run on defensive tackles like Harrell, Tyler and Mebane, then Soliai could even manage to slide into the bottom of the 2nd round. If he's there at #87, I swipe him nonetheless.

I like Blalock or Kalil in the 2nd round. Although without trading up in the 2nd or down from the 1st, both players will probably be off the board.

Dont be surprised if Drew Stanton is on the Cowboys' board instead of Beck at #93.

I like Barbre. His mean streak makes me compare him to Erik Williams. Dont be surprised if he goes late in the 2nd round or early in the 3rd though. If Barbre is there at #122, grab him.

Here's a quote from my friend Tony Pauline (who publishes the TFY Draft Preview for Scout.com) on Anthony Spencer's day at the combine: "Spencer's day was average. He ran some disappointing times in the 40 and was rather ordinary during linebacker drills." Dont be surprised with his weight issues if Alan Branch slides enough that Jerry wants to trade up for him. Although I keep seeing the Cowboys trading down only a few slots, grabbing Brandon Meriweather in round 1.

Is Spencer a legitimate #22? Would we be better off taking someone like Merriweather with the first pick and picking up someone like Woodley or Abimari in the second round? Is this the draft that's going to net us the book end opposite Ware without reaching?

Edit: Ah, yes, I feel a little better with Spencer at #30.

seems pretty realistic, but im not buying the trade down. jerry likes to talk, but he;s not naive either. i think he threw people a bone to see what they would do with it.the talent after around pick 12-15 is all very equal. especially the wr's. i dont see any difference in wr's from meacham to gonzalez. and very little difference from specner to a player like woodley.

out of all your mocks i like 4 the best. i want deossie in dallas.

people call me a homer, but pat hill knows OL. kyle young is going to be a big steal for a lucky team. im hoping its dallas. sure he was a little soft on his proday. but on the field, he shines. i'd take him over stephensen in a heartbeat.

I'm sold, though I probably wouldnt use a 3rd rd pick on the fat guy from Utah...I think he has become one of those trnedy kinda picks more than anything else...seems from the write ups he's more suited to be a day pick

Beck would be a nice backup QB...Barbre nice day two OL...Waters can be pretty good when he is 100%...I like him as a day two pick alot

I definitely like Spencer in the first. I don't think he'll be there at #30, though, and I don't think Rice will be there at #53. To me, trading down and getting Spencer is ideal, but I just don't think it can happen. If Rice is off the board, I'd rather go with a DB than a WR. Wilson or Weddle (in that order) would be my preference. I think WRs who can have an impact can be had later on (higgINS!higgINS!higgINS!), although I do like Courtey Brown. I think he's being underrated by the fans and the pundits and will probably go higher than you think. Waters would be a steal in the fifth. Barbre would be a great fourth rounder, and he may be there because of the small school stigma. I'd rather see a FB than a RB, but Ilaoa is a unique player who does unique things on the field.

All in all, I'd be pretty happy if things fell this way, except that I really want to see JL Higgins and and Walter Jones in Dallas. The only thing missing is a punt returner.

I think Palko has more upside . I might take M. Bush in place of Soliai .

The BYU QBs that made the NFL were all in the Lavell Edwards & Norm Chow era. Neither Bronco Mendenhall nor his predecessor Gary Crowton have put a QB in the NFL. Neither of them ran Edwards offense that racked up all of those yards and TDs either.

Translation, Beck is either the start of a new BYU QB system (I doubt this), or a talented kid on the rise.

In the 2nd I would take Rice, Anthony Gonzalez, Jason Hill, or Steve Smith at WR. I think Jarrett is going to fall to the top of the 2nd round and Gonzalez is going to go to Indy at 32. That pushes Rice down the list to us. I hope.

I had Woodley in the 2nd for my last Draft, which I like better than this one for #1 and #2. I like this one for the higher picks because of the trade down.

Every mock has holes. I still think Meachem is the best bet at 22, but someone who has been right in 2005 & 2006 is telling me that 2007 it is Spencer.
