I don't recall Newman struggling as a rookie. Were there moments he got beat? Sure, but not enough to say he struggled. He was pretty solid back there for the vast majority of the season. He was one of the main reasons that Dallas led the league in pass defense and were 2nd in points allowed.
Now maybe you can say he struggled his second season. He gave up some big plays, but even at that I did not think he played as poorly as some made it out to be. There was no pass rush that season and no safety help. People think the pass rush is poor this season. There was nothing in 2004. Wiley was a joke and just got in the way.
exactly newman did good his rookie season...his sophmore season..was pretty bad...and for these reasons......
1)we had no right corner back...so wed usually play a safety closer to that side which would leave newman in 1 on 1 situations more than half the day...and Champ Bailey could barely handle that, when he first went to denver(the same season newman struggled, bailey was getting beat in man)
2) if u remember..they were saying that newman was playing the whole season with a banged up knee.
