David Stewart, OT, Mississippi State
Height: 6:06.6 Weight: 323

Overview: Stewart is a very dependable drive blocker who is rarely beaten in any phase of blocking. The quiet, respectful athlete is a terror once he steps on the football field, showing aggression to go with size, strength and quickness to dominate in one-on-one situations. A two-way tackle and three-year letterman at Lawrence County High School, Stewart earned Class 4A All-State on the offensive line by the Birmingham News. He recorded 120 tackles, including 28 quarterback sacks during his junior and senior seasons while on defense. He was rated with the top offensive linemen in the western half of the southeast region (Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas) by Bobby Burton in his Rivals100.com preseason recruiting magazine and said to have "as much potential as anyone in the state" by that publication. Called the "sleeper of the year" in Alabama going into his senior season by Mississippi recruiting analyst Kevin Henderson, Stewart was named to both the Birmingham (Ala.) News and the Decatur Daily Super 24's as one of the top players in the state. He led the team to a 9-2 record during his senior season and into the first round of the state playoffs. Stewart redshirted as a freshman for MSU in 2001 and appeared in six games the following year, starting vs. Louisiana State, Arkansas and Troy State. He took over the right tackle slot in 2002, going on to start the next 35 contests. He graded 82 percent for blocking consistency as a sophomore and produced 76 knockdown blocks the following season. As a senior, he earned All-Southeastern Conference honors and was given the team's Bulldog Award, an honor given to the player who displayed the greatest work ethic, leadership ability, and character. Stewart graded a career-high 84.8 percent as a senior and also totaled 69 knockdowns. In his last 35 games, Stewart recorded 218 knockdowns and had 25 touchdown-resulting blocks.

Analysis: Positives... Has a large, developing frame that could carry additional bulk and shows good arm length, adequate bubble, thick thighs and calves. ... Quick out of his stance when run blocking and generates adequate pop on the play. ... Has the leg drive to maintain position and push the pile. ... Consistent player with good straight-line speed. ... Even though he takes bad angles in the second level and is a bit of a waist-bender, he rarely is beaten off the edge. ... His long arms pose a big problem for defensive ends trying to escape him around the corner. ... Drives off the ball with a good pad level in running plays and makes every intent to finish blocks. ... Can create good movement off the snap, using his size to lean into and occupy the defender. ... Does a good job of using those long arms with some control ability and can step laterally to seal and drive block with a striong straight-ahead burst. ... Uses his size effective to gain leverage and takes consistent angles coming off the ball as a drive blocker. ... Will lock on, steer and control, showing good aggression to search out secondary targets after making the initial block. ... Shows adequate strength and quickness on pulls with enough speed to get to the second level. ... Very active with his hands and shows good field awareness to pick up line games and blitzes.

Negatives... He has marginal lateral agility, but he uses his size and long arms effectively to handle blitzes and stunts. ... Plays a bit erect in pass protection and fails to generate a strong hand punch, but gets decent placement to lock on and steer. ... When he has to slide down the line, he gets narrow with his base, causing him to step on his feet and struggle to stay in front of the speed rushers. ... Needs to refine his footwork and improve his upper body strength, but he has a frame that can develop and an attitude that indicates he will quickly adapt to good coaching. ... Must do a better job of staying low in his pads, as he will get too high in his pass set and at times he seems to catch blocks. ... While he has only a marginal hand punch, it is effective. ... Needs to work on his kick slide in pass protection, as he is prone to stepping under himself. ... Has stiffness in his hips trying to get to the second level.
