I agree with you here, but they will be in trouble as soon as they no longer have exclusivity.
Let's not pretend that this has anything to do with the cost of providing the HD ST games, though. What's driving the cost is the new agreement with the NFL and the purchase of new HD equipment which will be used predominantly for other content besides HD ST.
HD sports are the killer app for HD. It's the form of HD content that users will pay for most readily. If I were a D* shareholder, I would applaud this move for the short term based on the exclusive agreement with the NFL.
