Garrett was the QB coach when Saban was the head coach at Miami and they are close friends. I'm sure Saban talks to Garrett about these players and Garrett trust what Saban has to say.
Barron is the leader of that great defense making all the calls and lining up players. He reads the formation and knows what plays about to happen.
Kirkpatrick although I don't hink he is a top 3 CB in this draft is what Ryan likes. Big strong physical and smart.
Now I do not like Upshaw in Ryan's scheme, I think Upshaw is a 4-3 DE to stiff to play LB in the NFL.
But I would be happy with Barron or Kirkpatrick. There are other players I would prefer but they are bette than Poe or Brockers.

I have some reservations about both players' speed and quickness for the next level... I think Barron will be a somewhat more talented Roy Williams, and I think Kirkpatrick will ultimately be forced to free safety by an inability to stay with the quicker wideouts...
You are, of course, right about Poe and Brockers... just say no to any defensive lineman not named Fletcher Cox (OK, Quinton Coples if he slips)...
