Well. Timeless means, it doesn't change. Adding color officially changed the photo, so you're right. It's no longer timeless.
That said, the black and white photo isn't gone. It still exist and I think the color version really brings out a lot of aspects that are missing from the black and white version. (gives the image pop) Having the image in both color and black and white is definitely a positive over just having a black and white version.
