Just to clarify some things:

Bringing a gun to an airport is not a crime as long as you declare it when you check in.

I have traveled with my concealed carry but I always make sure I declare it at the counter first thing when I talk to the person checking my bags.

Once declared you go to the TSA agent and they will verify that it isn't loaded and that you have your ammo in the original container (box) that you purchased it in. (no loose ammo) Once all that is done your given a special tag to claim it once you arrive at your destination.

It is entirely possible Smith didn't know the rules or his agent may have told him the wrong procedures.
"It's little bit like the description of pornography from years back. It's hard to define it. But you know what it is at the end of it. It's hard to define it. I think you know who is more physical. Often times you see that in the fourth quarter. A lot of time the team on the other side feels it. We pride ourselves on being a physical football team. It's important to us. It's an important time of the year to lay that foundation." - Coach Garrett
