As I was contemplating life without Cowboys football for the next nine months last night, I remembered a comment Parcells had made, about Henson, to the media in Green Bay just prior to that game.
Keep in mind this was after an off-season, mini-camps, and about a half season's worth of practices.
"I'm excited about his (Henson's) potential. There's a good chance that in a short time, he might be able to step in and try to do this."
To me, this is the most direct comment Parcells has ever made about Henson. He promoted him to second string a short time later and then came the famous half of a game start on Thanksgiving.
I guess this is what's giving me hope that all of the media crowing that Parcells thinks Henson doesn't have it, are wrong. How can he go from excitement about potential to thinking someone just doesn't have it in one half of live football?
Henson, in Bill's mind, was never supposed to play this year. Not a down. Only when QC was released and we were faced with a 41 year old dinosaur at QB did it become even a possibility. I realize most will say we should have taken a look at him and I couldn't agree more.
But more likely, it means he put Henson in there, saw he wasn't ready, I mean really wasn't ready, but that doesn't necessarily mean he won't be ready in the future.
Bill is now giving Henson the incentive, the only way he knows how...with mind games, to work his *** off for next year. I think if Henson stays at VR and doesn't go to NFL Europe that's another good indication.
I think next season will see Henson starting, if not immediately, a short time into the season, but of course Bill will have a quick hook for our resident AARP QB.
I know it's not much to hang your off season hopes on but I can't get that quote out of my head...it makes no sense that someone could do a complete 180 after watching Henson for 6 or 8 months on the practice field.
