Summer's Dallas mock draft (no trades)
note: this is very, very preliminary
1st round Cal CB Daymeion Hughes
cover-2 corner and ball-hawk, 13 INTs the last 2 years, 8 this year, has good size, special teams ace, and above all, a great athlete, although he may not time very well in terms of speed, he's this year's Antonio Cromartie, who remember was taken one spot below Bobby Carpenter by the Chargers, and we'll be picking around that spot in the 1st round this year
2nd round Michigan DE Lamar Woodley
projects as a tweener DE/OLB at the next level, excellent in pursuit and is solid in both rushing the passer and playing the run, doesn't have ideal height at 6'2", but can fill the role Parcells had Bobby Carpenter playing earlier in the year, ILB, and will be a little more stout at the point of attack than Kevin Burnett since he weighs around 270 at least
3rd round LSU WR Craig Davis
speedy WR with good size, elusive after the catch, and is a very good punt returner
4th round Rutgers FB Brian Leonard
the FB, or F-back, Lousaka Polite wishes he could be, jack of all trades, can run, block, and catch passes out of the backfield
5th round Fresno State C Kyle Young
big, huge, nasty mauler at C, 4-year starter, experienced and smart
*no 6th*
7th round Michigan WR Steve Breaston
average receiver w/ some skills, even better PR
7th round Utah DT Paul Soliali
been wanting for us to draft a huge Samoan NT
7th round BPA OG/OT/OC

Overall, nice mock.
1) I like Hughes but wonder if we wouldn't go elsewhere with the pick. Although, we could then move Henry to FS therefore possibly improving two positions.
2) Putting Woodley at ILB ruins the pick. He is a monster at DE/OLB so why move him inside? I would rather have Brinkley in the 3rd if we are looking inside.
3) I'm not sold completely on Davis. He tends to alligator-arm passes over the middle. He may turn out ok, but I think he will go in the 4th since he was the second best on his team.
4) Leonard may go earlier, possibly late second. Third round on I would snag him in a heartbeat; we could use a little Leonard leap. If you switch Leonard and Davis I'd say get er done.
5) Young is all over the board because some think he is slow moving and slow thinking. He has the size and strength that you look for. I have seen him in the 1st-2nd down to the 5th-6th so if he were here take him now! Maybe he could move to OG or something.
7A) Ehhh, I would rather go somewhere else. Average at best WR. This is the spot I would take him but I would prefer to grab more OL/NT or something.
7B) Soliali will probably go earlier depending on combine numbers like Ngata did but in the 4th round range.
7C) Nice pick
Overall not a bad draft. I will try to get one of mine out there so you can critique me, lol.

I know he has yet to declare, but Reggie Nelson (S-Florida) would be a great pick for us if he comes out.
I am also a TTech homer, but think Joel Filani would be a great mid round pick for us at WR, if he does not go sooner..
the only problem I have with your mock is you put BPA in the 7th.....we should pick the BPA at every pick.

It all comes down to how good your scouts are. As long as they get it right about who are players and who are just bodies, then you will be fine as long as you stay loyal to your board.

I like Joel Filani as well and compare him to the Jaguars receivers: tall, fast enough but can kill you.
When you do a mock you are assuming that the person you pick is the BPA around that pick. Obviously this is what makes mocks hard but fun nonetheless.

I like the direction of your draft...
I definitely want a CB and a pass rusher in the 1st 2 picks but as JustSayNO said... Woodley wont make it out of the 1st round.
If he is there for us in the 1st I will be begging for him as a Cowboy.
He could be a perfect fit in the 3-4.

if Woodley isn't there in the 2nd, I have a contingency plan in Mizzou DE Brian Smith, he's a little light at around 230, but is 6'4", so he has room to add weight to his frame, he had 9 sacks as a Junior, and despite suffering a minor injury in week 8 this year, he tallied 7.5 sacks, he also had 5 pass breakups in each of the last 2 years, and an INT as a Junior, so he can cover some
he's a 2nd/3rd round pick IMO

No offense, but you should really do a COMPLETE seven round draft to put your Cowboys picks into context. Without the context of who is available, then just listing one team's hypothetical picks is of only so much use.

well neither process is going to be accurate, or even close, esp. at this point, and I don't know, nor really bother to care what other team's draft needs are, my mocks are basically just picking the positions I feel we should target, and then I choose the players I see that might be available when we pick

I like Hughes but the rest is awful.

Im not trying to be mean but im just not a big fan of the other players. Especially Breaston... Hard to see us not drafting an O-lineman in the first four rounds. I like Craig Davis but I think we can get a better WR at that spot.

I have us signing Kris Dielman in FA, the OG from San Diego, w/ that taken care of, we wouldn't need to draft an Olineman until the 2nd day for depth
and Craig Davis is considered to be a 1st day pick, Breaston was just a pick for STeams and his ability to return punts

The only way i don't see us drafting an O-lineman in the 1st 4 rounds is if we sign a Tackle and Guard in FA. I would like to see Tony Pashos and a mauler of a RG signed. I would be much happier with us drafting Justin Blaylok or Levi Jones in the first round. Blaylok could take over at RG from day 1.
