What is the obsession over a nobody QB like Ricky Ray?
Jerry Jones: "I don't know when I've ever seen a player impress our staff without having played in a ball game any more than Matt Johnson."

Even if Smith should find himself riding the bench on some team's roster, that will be more than what can be said of Ricky Ray. Also, just because you have a personal love affair with an NFL wannabe like Little Ricky does not make everything you say or feel about him true either. Please note that I'm a diehard LSU fan and could care less about Smith.

Philo Beddoe believes that Ricky Ray is the next Warren Moon. Funny. No one in the NFL shares his opinion.

I don't really like the comparisons between Brees and Smith. Brees, coming out of Purdue, was much further along in his QB skills then is Smith. While I think the comparisons, physically have merrit, I don't really see Smith in the same situation as Brees coming into the NFL. When Brees came into the league, San Diego tried to replace him a couple of times at QB. His skills as a QB saved him. Eventually, he lasted long enough to get a good opportunity and the rest is history. The team that takes Smith, IMO, is going to have to invest a great deal of time and snaps into him if he's ever going to be ready to play. To me, it's really a matter of time invested where Smith is concerned. QBs taken high get opportunity to develop typically. They get 3 or 4 years just because of the initial investment. QBs taken in the second day don't always get a great deal of time to develop. I believe that Smith will be a second day pick. If he goes to a team that is not completely sold on him as a QB, it's going to be hard for him to develop. That team has to believe in Smith enough to invest the 2 or 3 years it would take him to develop into a servicable NFL QB IMO. Add to the fact that you then have to believe in him enough to resign him as his initial contract is likely to expire before he ever produces for whatever team drafts him and that constitues a tough road for him IMO. He is not prototypical so he's not going to get the benifit of the doubt. I just think it's going to be tough for him to get on the field enought to prove anything right away. The question for him is all about time IMO.

CFL is kind of like the NFL, right?
I mean, success in the CFL is the same thing like having success in the NFL, no?

I think Smith will turn out to be a good QB I think he does have very good skills and has show great improvement each year. As for the comparison to Brees it was based only on height but none the less I do think Troy Smith is a guy who can develope into a very good QB regardless of his draft status. Some team will draft him and he will get a chance to show himself. For goodness sake we have a QB who went undrafted and sat for the 1st 3 years so to me where you get drafted or if your not drafted at all does not make a hill of beans it is what you do when you get your chance.

So what, that is the CFL not the NFL. Ray was brought in by the 9ers and failed, he was brought in to the Jets and failed. What he does in the CFL is meaningless.

I never said that. A great CFL QB can be an NFL prospect, though.

All well and good but how many QBs did we go through prior to Romo? How many of those guys got a decent opportunity to develop? How many coaches believe in drafting QBs and bringing them along like Parcells did? These are the questions you have to consider before you ever think about comparing Smith to Romo. Will he get drafted by a team who believes in him like we did Romo?
That doesn't happen very often IMO.

undrafted I agree but there are starting QB's in the NFL who were day 2 picks Brady himself was a 6th rd pick. What I'm saying is Smith will be in camp with some team and what he shows them will determine his future not where he was picked. I do agree any team that invest in a 1st rd QB they pretty much need to get him out there and live or die with him. Smith likely will get selected around the 4th rd and will get the chance to sit and learn without the pressure that QB's taken in the 1st rd will face.

Brees is 6 foot flat too. Yea, it really hampered his ability to play. What a bum that Drew Brees is.
I diddnt bother reading the last two pages of the thread, so I missed that some one allready brought up Brees. Measureables are so completely overrated that I wish that the common fan wouldnt have access to them. "Oh, he sucks..too short. He sucks..too slow". Watchign the games is meaningless, the measurables say it all.

I dont necessarily agree with this. They ran the 5 wide offense when Brees was in school. Even Kyle Orton looked like a superstar in that offense.
