Bear in mind that Smith projects at Safety, too. Interim CB and eventually replacement for Williams or Hamlin.
I don't think the first two picks are redundant at all, especially since both positions have been perennial needs for the past few years.
Still, I tend to agree it's unlikely, but I don't think the strategy is as outlandish as some here think.

I am a big fan of Tracy Porter but I don't see him going in the 1st rd. Malcolm Jenkins, Mike Jenkins, Antione Cason, Aqib Talib and Leodis Mckelvin are all better prospects IMO.
I also think we will chose 2 corners early but not in the 1st rd. Maybe one in the 1st an another in the 3rd or 4th. My dream draft would look like this:
1st Antoine Cason
1st Early Doucett
2nd Chris Johnson(trade up)
3rd Tracy Porter
4th Jarod Mayo
5th BPA
6th BPA
7th BPA
Church is in session

yeah he could be a safety, but Hamlin is a pro-bowler and pretty young. If we don't resign him, which would be a huge mistake, then I could see us drafting Smith and a CB, but unless we're cutting RW, which would also be a mistake imo, there's no point in drafting a safety at all. Keith Davis is a fine back-up (yeah I know he's a FA) and Pat Watkins has shown enough imo to keep us from drafting a FS of the future. And Courtney Brown is a wild card.

I see this draft as strengthening both our CB and S positions/depth.
We agree that we need to improve our third corner. But the second corner is also something to be concerned about. A. Henry has missed 3 games 2 out of 3 seasons with us, his contract expires in two seasons, and we could release him after next year without taking a huge financial hit should his play be eclipsed by a younger player.
Roy W is also signed only until 2010.
In two years time at the latest, both of these guys will probably be starters. That's all you can ask for in the draft.

If RW is under contract till 2010, then thats 3 years. This is the 2007 season, so he still has 2008', 2009' and 2010'.
And I agree that who ever we draft should be someone who can be a starter in 2 years assuming Henry walks, but I'd wait and add another CB when Henry leaves. We could always resign him as the #3 or like I pointed out, pro-bowl corners can be found after rd 1, not to mention solid guys like Ken Lucas were also drafted after rd 1.

Thanks for the remedial math lesson. Doh!
Okay, but remember that both Henry and TNew were injured this year, and TNew isn't exactly a youngin, having been a 25 year old rookie.
God forbid if we loose one of our starting DBs (at either position) for the year. There's quite a drop in talent from our first to second stringers.
I wonder how Ball and Brown are developing.
I'm eager to see what FA signings we make to better gauge our draft needs.

Like I said earlier, injuries are unpredictable. TO and Crayton could both get hurt so do we draft 2 WRs in rd1. I'd actually like for us to possibly sign Shawn Springs to be the #3 CB, then still take a CB in rd1, probably at 31 though. As far as WR goes, I' be interested in Laverneous Coles who plays very similar to Terry Glenn, but is younger (turned 30 like 2 weeks ago). Other than that I wouldn't sign anyone except our own guys or maybe a back-up QB

Our secondary has been a sore spot, this is a strong draft for CBs and we have an extra pick; I like the idea of picking off two cornerback's in the first four picks - especially if one could project at S as well.

Anyone still think that bringing in two starting caliber DBs via the draft is a preposterous notion?

What about signing one and drafting one? I've read Nnamdi Asomugha is going to opt out of his contract. Might be a decent pickup. Marcus Trufant is also a FA I think.

The only two top 10 rushing teams left in the playoffs are the Chargers and the Giiants. The Giant's victory was due to their passing game, our inability to stop it at critical moments, and the pressure they applied to Romo down the stretch. San Diego won because Philip Rivers threw for 3 TDs and because their pass defense stepped up when it needed to.
Our running game is adequate event though we could use another back to platoon with MBIII. Our secondary, on the other hand, is a glaring weakness.

San diego has 2 good RB and a 3rd that's decent. Gaints had 4 decent RB's. Even though this is a pass happy league you still need to be able to run when it matters. We didn't do that thus the loss to the giants. Two strong RB's means One compliments MB3 and the other will become his replacement. We also have weakness in CB, DL, and ILB. All i believe will be addressed. What we learned from the playoffs is MB3 can't carry the load and is better suited as a short yardage back and not a starter. If he ran the ball 35 times in a game he would probably die.
Our secondary will get better if we can get a rookie that could come in and start right away. Pushing Henry to the 3rd CB and Reeves back to the 4th CB spot.
