Morning Santiago...Zoniacs....early morning hooligans.

On this day in history....

1971 ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier, of Philadelphia, won a decision over Muhammad Ali, who had been previously undefeated. (Man oh man, for me, that was as bad as seeing the Cowboys lose the super bowl)

RIP Santiago

Still can't believe the whupping Ali got ..Fell off his lofty perch hard on that fight..I was kinda glad -I didn't like Frazier---but I did't like Ali's arrogance back then --course I was a young lad --Morning Juke -fine piece of info

The 11th round was like something out of a Rocky film...Ali got hit time and again...and never went down. I've never seen anything like it. (starts at around the 6:30 mark in the vid below.

In the 15th, he got hit with a mammoth left hook...he was OUT...yet, when his butt hit the canvas, he bounced back up.

I have a big collection of fights...all of Ali's...all of Frazier's...all of Foreman's...

The layoff truly cost him his legs....the difference is astounding. In the Frazier fight, which he took only 6 months after coming back, he fought flat footed.

But check out below...NO ONE ever saw a heavyweight who could move like this...and compare his movement here to his lack of movement vs Frazier...

RIP Santiago

Morning Pops and Zoners

I missed those classic fights since I was only 2 or 3 at the time

But I did catch a documentary about Ali's last fight vs Larry Holmes and there was no way they should have let Ali in the ring. You could see the changes in so clearly. It was hard to watch.

And don't forget, he fought Trevor Berbick 18 months or so AFTER the Holmes fight.

Agreed. He speech was already slurred....his coordination was beginning to slip...and he blasted himself with thyroid medication before the fight. In spite of all of that Holmes couldn't put him away...which truly screwed with Holmes' mind. He had to keep beating on a guy he loved. Once Ali truly learned he could take a punch as well as anyone in history, it became his style to fight like that. The irony was, before the layoff he used to say that he made it so that the heavy punchers couldn't find anything to hit...when he came back, his philosophy was to let guys hit him until the got tired...bad idea against the likes of Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Shavers, etc...

I'm amazed that Holmes fight was stopped. I think the ref was Richard Greene?
RIP Santiago

They where classic fights of all time ----I am partial to some of the early Sugar Ray Leonard fights..I admire Ali for his skills --just alot of things I didn't -don't- and won't agree with in his life --But Its His Life.
