I like Rex Ryan's brashness, but his defense let us down so much, I'd rather he don't say nothing until they can be the reason why the team won vs inspite of.
I wish Jason Garrett had some brashness, tho. He's like the confident professor who is always calm cool, and collected. It would be nice if said something that wasn't always the PC thing to say.

The difference is that Jimmy could back his team without denigrating the opposition or stooping to insults. Ryan failed that test when he mocked "Megatron" unnecessarily.

Well he failed, because his defense failed to contain Megatron. Had they held him in check, then people would've blown it off as that's just Rob. They didn't and that was the 1st egg of the omelete that was about to get put on his face throughout the season.

That was a statement of fact. It also inspired Buddy to take action.

It was a "stoop to insult" that he "never" did.
"The asthma field is over there." Next you'll tell me there really was an asthma field just like Buddy really did have a fat butt.

This comment bothered the normally unflappable 49ers Head Coach, George Seiffert. He said of Johnson's boast, "Jimmy's got balls. I'll give him that. We're going to find out if they are paper mache' or brass."
When the final gun sounded the score read Cowboys 38, 49ers 21. It would be the penultimate game of Jimmy's career in Dallas. After the game he walked up to the microphone in the press room and simply said, "They're brass."

Jimmy's call to the Galloway show .... I heard it live. It was a crazy evening during a great time.
Answer for this off-season: Assemble an elite offense.

I love this old story about Jimmy, but in my opinion Jimmy's greatest line was less publicized.
It was when he told Tod Christenson at halftime of SB 27 "We aren't Houston!"
He said it in response to a question Tod asked: Whether he discussed with his team that Buffalo was a comeback team as evidenced by their historic comeback against Houston a few weeks before in the playoffs.
That line sent chills down my spine. It's one of my proudest moments as a Cowboy fan!

I liked that one, too. Jimmy's line about "They're brass" was also a response to the media. Jimmy didn't just come out of nowhere to make the guarantee. The media during that week was favoring the 49ers and Jimmy responded. A brash move, but it wasn't unsolicited like many of Rex Ryan's comments.

I loved it. I've said it before about Rivers and QBs and such but I love swagger like that. I love confidence like that.
I love that people can have some ego, and confidence, and bravado about them that they're not afraid to say "Hey this is what I'm going to do. Now try and stop me." I love that.
One of my favorite things about that time is when Emmitt, Troy, or Michael will talk about how simple their offense really was.
You knew that they had a handful of plays that they were going to run, and run a lot, and they dared you to stop them.
You knew the draw up the middle was coming multiple times in a game. Yet Emmitt and those Cowboys chewed people up with it.
3rd and 3 or 3rd and 4? You know whats coming. A slant to Irvin. Stop it if you can. Most of the time people simply couldn't do anything about it.
I loved that.

Jimmy Johnson did NOT make the win-guarantee and 3-inch-headlines comment because he was irritated at the media. I heard an intervview with him him where he explained that he feared his team might be losing focus that week leading up to the game. So he made the comment to put his team on the spot, and on the hook to bring home the victory.
The thing I loved about Jimmy Johnson was that he had tough-as-nails players who responded better with the pressure on them. So when Johnson feared they might be waning he turned the pressure on them with the guarantee.
George Seifert, and the rest of the mediots, took Johnson's guarantee as a slam on the 49ers. The difference was that these comments riled them up in a negative way. They got all tangled in them while the Cowboys players respondned by re-focusing on the game - as Jimmy Johnson hoped and intended.
And it worked. And it was a balls-y brass move by him and is swung like a wrecking ball right through the 49ers weakness.

Trent Dilfer: "Tony [Romo] has greatness in him. I think when you talk to other people that really play the quarterback position, there's a few guys that really have incredible greatness in them, and Tony is one of them. I think the issue here is he needs more help from his teammates. I think they are not nearly as talented as people say they are, from 1 to 53. I'm talking about the total roster.”

The previous week, the Niners destroyed the Giants, whereas we struggled somewhat with the Packers, so Jimmy was probably just trying to alleviate some anxiety in the fan base while simultaneously motivating his players.
