The Cowboys mention lots of guys, but only pick a small subset of them.

With that comes a bunch of comical rabbit holes for us to chase into and see if there is legitimate information to collect, or simply a smoke screen. And with Dallas and Jerry Jones, it is tough to tell the difference.
For instance, when we have too much information leaking about a prospect like Memphis NT Dontari Poe, part of us wants to ignore it as an obvious bluff.
Look at this from Clarence Hill in the Fort Worth Star Telegram:
The Cowboys did not bring in defensive tackle Dontari Poe as expected. According to a team source, the Cowboys "like him a lot but don't want to draw attention to him."
[View Full Quote]So, instead of bringing him in to bring a lot of attention to him, they leak the information to a newspaper which seems to bring even more attention to him? Things that make you shake your head.
But, this issue of Pre-draft visits should be covered and discussed. The Cowboys have been very consistent in using their 30 visits every year to bring in legit prospects that they seriously are considering. Just about every year, that 30 man list gives us many clues as to who they are serious about, and we should strongly consider the list. And, when is the last time they made a first round pick that we didn't expect? I suppose Mike Jenkins, the second 1st Rounder in 2008, would qualify. Otherwise, they nearly telegraphed Felix Jones, Dez Bryant, and Tyron Smith. So, the idea that they bluff is just not true. They generally have gone in exactly the direction we expected, so we should keep an eye on what they tell us in the weeks before the draft. And they should figure out why they have so many leaks.

I just think sometimes it is obvious who any team is targeting based on who will be there and what the team needs. Tyron Smith was a no brainier last season.
This season is a perfect example we have needs in the secondary, offensive and front 7 so every player under the sun at those positions is being linked to us. Poe, Cox, Upshaw, Kirkpatrick, Glenn, DeCastro, Barron, etc. It is all a guessing game.

I'll spend the rest of the weekend trying to make sense of that statement.

We'll settle this with a good dust up.

Yeah. I read what Sturm said, but I disagree with him.
For example, the Cowboys were also interested in Mike Iupati the year Dez was drafted.
Answer for this off-season: Assemble an elite offense.

2004 - Steven Jackson (Julius Jones in 2nd round)
2005 - DeMarcus Ware and Marcus Spears (correct)
2006 - Bobby Carpenter (correct)

2008 - Felix Jones & Brandon Flowers (Correct & Incorrect)
2009 - No pick
2010 - Dez Bryant (correct)
2011 - Tyron Smith (correct)
I jokingly chalk it up to 'being fluent in Jerry-speak.' Most fo the picks I've been happy with outside of passing up on Jackson along with picking Spears and Carpenter. However, I never really thought of it as telegraphing. I wish we would trade down more to stockpile picks.

Jerry Jones tells you every year what we are going to do.
So the answer is a resounding YES.

I actually had the exact same picks that Yakuza did, so I am not surprised. It really hasn't been as difficult as many of you think.

Did this really need to be moved to the draft zone to die?
I understand the Fan Zone is currently littered with classic threads that we cannot move off the board but c'mon.

Especially considering every single fan in the 'know' usually had it narrowed down to 1 or 2 guys, it's not that hard - look at position of need, look at players available, look at what pro days we attended, look at who we invited in for visits, and listen to Jerry the week before the draft, and you'll know exactly who we're taking.
Last year we knew it was Smith, Dez falling made him a no brainer, we knew it was gonna be Felix and best corner available in 2008, in 2007 we needed a pass rusher, in 06 we were gonna take an ILB, etc etc. You get the point.
I seriously doubt YR has nailed it every single year, because I don't think anyone really could've forecasted Dez falling last year, 04 was a total surprise to me with Julius Jones>S. Jackson, and the Ware/Spears/Merriman draft came down to the last second and the draft room was split on that.
7/10 years the picks seemed either pretty obvious, or info was leaked prior to the draft where it became apparent who we were going after if they were there, and most of the time, the guys were there.

I think we just have a more savvy fan base then most. We know what time it is. Not everything was leaked. Especially considering at one point we het linked to almost every player.
I challenge the fact that this year there is 1 standout we are linked to. Poe? DeCastro? Cox? Coples? Barron? Gilmore? Kirkpatrick?
Come on now.
