The Case Against DeCastro
Very interesting:

--Not every scout is enamored with DDC: in a recent edition of their draft insider web column, the fine gents at Pro Football Weekly quoted an NFL insider as saying "DeCastrois overrated. On tape, he is a good guard, but he is not special by any means. You love the kid, you love the work ethic, you love the makeup. But in a normal draft, you’d like to get him in the second." The second? As in round? I think this might just be overstating things a bit. But this source does bring up a good point. In a draft with precious few sure things, a Steady Eddie like DeCastro is going to get over-rated. Scouts have likely taken a step back from DDC; now I think its time for us to do so.

The drop-off at guard isn't steep: Unlike other positions, where there is a steep decline in quality after a handful of first-rounders, there are several second-round guards to be had, all of them on the above list. No, they don't grade out as high as DeCastro, but the difference between their grades and his is less than between, say, that of Fletcher Cox and Devon Still. One of the reason for this is....

Guard is not a premium position: In the first round of the draft, the most talented players are available. As a result, teams should draft the positions that are either most dependent on raw ability or at which there is a premium on having a talented player. In a pass-oriented league, those positions are: QB, WR, OT, CB and pass rusher. I call these the Positions of Great Import (POGI). Typically, these positions square off against one another, and either enjoying or suffering a talent disparity in these match-ups can strongly affect its outcome. For example, if your left tackle is being whipped by the opposing pass rusher, your offense is going to struggle to pass the ball, regardless of what the other ten players are doing.

DeCastro is going to be a HOF caliber linemen.
As the official head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Jason Garrett is 16-16............"Its a Process of stacking good days"
2013 Prediction: "NO PLAYOFFS"

It's all conjecture, how can Tony Mandarich and Robert gallery go top five and be absolute mediocre players but Orlando Pace and Jonathan Ogden can be direct hits.
Jason Smith can be an injury prone dud at number two in 2009 but Tyron Smith can be a stud in the making at number 9 in 2011.
And how come the best lineman EVER in larry Allen fell to the second round in 1994?
Because nobody really knows if these guys can play at the next level, they just know they look good or have nice intangibles.
DeCastro might not be more than another Kyle Turley, a fair player but no superstar, he too taken in the first round as a guard.
Or maybe he'll be another Damien Woody, a versatile guard/ center taken in the first round.
Or maybe he'll be Alan Faneca, an uninspiring first round lineman picked by the Steeler in the 90s.
Give it three years and we'll know, one if he's amazing
Conan O'Brien will work you until you are pale !

No, but he quoted one.
Isn't it at least worth a thought? It's not like he slapped something against the wall or has an agenda. Read his post-combine article:

Yeah it kind of scares me when people use he's the safest pick as the reason to take him. That's what they were saying about Bobby Carpenter too.

I have kinda been saying the same thing about DeCastro the guard but DeCastro the center really does have the tool set to be a very good center...he has good lateral movement, can pull and can block smaller men (not easy for a big guy to hit a faster more mobile object)against the big NG he can get some help with his initial drive block and he seems to be able to make line calls...I really like him as a center not so much at guard
Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a great ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair....Bertrand Russell

Oh, by the way, the main reason Dallas goes to the Super Bowl this year.
Hope you don't mine if I ignore you. Troll

I wasn't in love with the Smith pick last year but they really did their homework and it seems to have worked out pretty well. I think JG knows that you need to hit on your first round pick and so I will be comfortable with who they take. That hasn't been the case for a lot of years since Jimmy Jonhson left.

so he quoted one scout who might be good or not and that is enough? Versus all those that say otherwise on DeCastro?
It was a hit piece plain and simple.
Ross Tucker on Sirius says DeCastro is the best guard prospect he has seen for years. From someone who actually played the positions. So I will take his word over some UNKNOWN SCOUT who might not knowmuch at all about O line.

Why does a scouts word count for DeCastro and not Brockers? Seems to be some double standard going around.
By the way, not singling you out. I just find it amusing when things like this work out like they do.
