Come on, you know this isn't a legit question. Now do you think they can be or do you think they will be the best Cowboy duo is more like it?

I'm certain they can be. I'm also confident that they will have an excellent year together in 2012 making this topic sound less silly next year.

When you think about it, it's clear we really need them to be special if were going to compete at the highest level.
We all know the OL's potential in 2012 is probably average to something less than good.

Romo and all the offensive skill players are going to have to stay healthy and play to their potential for us this offense to approach that all critical top 5 ranking.

They have the talent to become one of the great duos. But they aren't quite there imo.

The potential is definitely there for the future, though.

This question is several years premature.

Had Jimmy Smith remained in Dallas, I think we'd be talking Irvin/Smith at this moment.

True but both Alworth and Hayes were past their prime at the time they played together. In my opinion Pearson and Hill were the best duo closely followed by Irvin and Harper. Although Harper never put up big numbers he made a lot of big plays and helped stretch the field for Irvin.

Honestly they're not even close to the best duo. Austin only has one career 1000 yard season and that was 3 years ago. He has inconsistent hands and his numbers have been in decline ever since his productive 09 season. As for Dez he has the potential to be the greatest receiver in team history but he has yet to live up to his potential.

Hopefully the 2012 season will be his breakout season. The Cowboys are 2 games below 500 the past 2 seasons with the duo of Dez and Austin. Unless the Cowboys become a force and Austin regains his form from 09 and Dez lives up to his potential it's silly for anyone to put them at the top as the best wr combo in Cowboys history.

Maybe... OR I wonder if it was one of those cases where the player had to get out of town to fulfill his potential. Essentially Jimmy Smith was a big time #1 WR... and at the time the Cowboys had the ultimate alpha dog #1 WR possible in Irvin.

This isnt a very fair question. However I will say that Dez despite all the knocks he gets on this board, numbers wise, is ahead of some of the all time greats in Cowboy recevier history for their first two years.

Spags has a real interesting article about it.

Yet you completely ignore that that duo was never especially productive as far as duos go.
In the final two months of 2011, Romo’s passer rating was 115.9.
